Starting Wage Range: $24.60/hr. - $31.84/hr.
Job Summary:
This position is part of a team of professionals in the Natural Resources Department whose mission is the responsible stewardship of Tribal lands, waters, and resources. This position's primary job duty is equipment operation for habitat conservation, restoration and maintenance.
Essential Functions:
- Assists with multi-task operations that may affect the Tribe’s natural resources.
- Assists in the construction, maintenance, and enhancement of fish and wildlife habitat projects.
- Operates equipment and machinery such as skid steer, tractor, excavator, chain saws, weed eaters, etc.
- Tracks equipment use hours and conducts all maintenance requirements for each piece of equipment.
- Assists in the monitoring of various fish and wildlife habitat projects.
- Receives work tasks through verbal, written, and mapped instructions including project objectives and specifications.
- Prioritizes work tasks to achieve project deadlines.
- Conducts, supervises, and organizes logistics for field operations.
- Utilizes flatbed and trailer to safely haul heavy equipment and parts to and from work sites.
- Uses maps, compass, global positioning systems (GPS) and/or other tools to locate job sites and orient self in the field.
- Maintains knowledge of current fire restrictions, levels, procedures, etc. and complies with local restrictions based on location of daily work and project area.
- Tracks work hours accordingly by funding source.
- Serves as member of the Fish and Wildlife Program, working in close coordination with the other Natural Resources staff as applicable and as directed.
- Performs a variety of other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education, Experience, and Licenses:
- Requires high school diploma
- Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly related experience in the natural resources field such as parks, forestry, or fish and wildlife.
- OR equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Driving Requirements:
- Must maintain a valid Oregon driver’s license or obtain one upon hire, qualify for the Tribe’s vehicle insurance, and provide proof of personal vehicle insurance.
Qualifications, Registrations, and Certifications:
- Equipment operation experience preferred
- Works long hours, under adverse conditions, days, nights, weekdays, and/or weekends.
- Must have a good understanding of basic concepts of habitat conservation and management.
- Must have the ability to read, understand and interpret technical documents including scientific data.
- Requires basic math skills.
- Must have excellent oral communication and professional correspondence.
- Must be able to work with highly flexible multitask work priorities. Requires ability to balance work demands from many sources.
- Must have a good understanding of field and workplace safety requirements and be able to complete job tasks both safely and effectively.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment requiring close coordination and respectful interpersonal communication, in the field and in the office.
- Ability to work independently in the field including ability in map reading, compass orientation, aerial photo interpretation, and global positioning systems (GPS).
- Ability to use computer programs including Microsoft products.
- Knowledge of and sensitivity to Native American culture is required.
Environmental Factors and Conditions/Physical Requirements:

- Continually requires working with fingers rather than the whole hand or arm. Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands and/or fingers. Frequently requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks.

- Frequently requires walking or moving about to accomplish tasks. Frequently moving about on streams and in the woods requires balancing on narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces.
- Frequently requires ascending or descending steep terrain using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Such activity frequently requires reaching or extending arms for handholds to aid in ascent.
- Fieldwork frequently involves heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- The worker is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker is frequently subject to varied terrain and extreme weather conditions for periods of more than one hour, which may include rain, snow, sleet, hail, wind, sun, fire, extreme heat or cold, extremely high or low humidity, or a combination of these conditions.
- The worker is frequently subject to noise, sufficient to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level.
- The worker is frequently subject to fumes, odors, dust, mists, and chemicals. The worker is frequently subject to exposure to animals, such as snakes and insects.
- Supports a safe work environment by performing all duties in accordance with Tribal safety policies and procedures, and Emergency Management Plan.
- Due to the nature of the interactions with other employees and the public we serve, employees may be required to provide documentation of, or receive, certain health vaccinations.
- May be called upon to serve as a Disaster Reservist during emergencies.
- Local travel is frequently required. Travel outside of the state is infrequently required.
