POSITION: Corrections Cook
SALARY: $20.00-$22.56
REPORTS TO: Cook Supervisor
LOCATION: Colville Tribal Correctional Facility
Basic Functions: Performs the day-to-day activities of the Colville Tribal Correctional Facility Dietary Department performing duties as a Cook with the preparation and serving of meals on assigned shift and under the direction of the Food Service Manager, washing dishes, pots and pans, as well as the trays and setting up the drinks for the following meals. Is required to keep Dietary area clean and sanitary in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations governing the facility.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
- The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent,
- Must be a minimum age of 21 years;
- Two (2) years of experience of restaurant type cooking
- Two years of experience in food service in an institutional, military, or large commercial kitchen;
- Must pass a Tribal, State and Federal Background Check (a felony or assult/battery or domestic violence conviction may disqualify the applicant from employment);
- Must pass a Polygraph Examination;
- Must pass a drug test and maintain throughout employment;
- Must be drug free throughout employment.
- Requires a valid driver’s license. Food Handler’s Card. First Aid & CPR Card
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledgeable of the practices, methods, and equipment used in preparing, cooking, and serving food in large quantities;
- Must have knowledge of behavior of persons in detention facilities;
- Must have knowledge of sanitation methods in cleaning and caring of equipment;
- Must have knowledge of storing and inventory methods of large quantities of food;
- Must be knowledgeable of the common weights and measures of food proportion requirements;
- Must be knowledgeable of the federal, state and Tribal standards, guidelines and regulations governing this facility.
- Must have knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of kitchen areas and equipment.
- Requires the ability to speak and read the English language and communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Requires ability to prepare, cook, and coordinate cooking processes so that nutritional meals are prepared and served on time;
- Requires ability to guide and instruct inmates in semi-skilled food preparation, service, and cleaning tasks;
- Requires ability to read and understand recipes, labels, and instructions for food preparation;
- Requires ability to perform basic mathematical operations to determine and proportions of ingredients with a minimum of waste;
- Requires ability to cut, slice, and grind meat and poultry;
- Requires ability to follow oral and written directions;
- Requires ability to maintain personal cleanliness and neatness;
- Requires ability to maintain effective working relationships with officers;
- Requires ability to supervise inmates in assisting with the cooking and cleaning of the kitchen;
- Requires ability to orientate the inmates on post orders and kitchen rules and regulations.
- Requires ability to maintain effective security of kitchen equipment and utensils; prepare routine records and reports.

- The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls;
- Frequently required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally required to lift and/or move up to 100 pounds;
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus;
- Routinely required to perform manual labor associated with food preparation for large groups, and to stand for long periods of time.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.
TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.
If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
