POSITION: Fisheries Biologist I/II
SALARY: $26.71- $35.20, per hour DOE
REPORTS TO: Biologist Senior
LOCATION: Omak, Washington
Basic Functions: The Biolgist I-II assists the Senior Fish Biologist who is responsible for monitoring juvenile and adult Summer Steelhead populations within the Okanogan subbasin. The primary objectives of this position include conducting field work in the spring season for redd surveys, assisting with an Egg-to-Fry survival study designed to fill gaps in life cycle modeling and helps to maintain a PIT array detection network. Additional responsibilities include collection of field data through mark-recapture electrofishing, habitat surveys, snorkel surveys, and other data collection activities as needed to support the Research, Monitoring and Evaluation subdivision. This position also requires office related work, including submitting permit applications, data management, data analysis, and technical report writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
Biologist I
- Requires A Bachelor's degree in fisheries, wildlife, natural resources science, or aquatic sciences in fisheries and habitat research. Transcript required.
Biologist II
- Requires a Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in fisheries, natural resources science, or environmental science AND 36 months' experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/or research; OR A Master's Degree from a regionally accredited college or university in the applicable science AND 12 months experience at the Biologist I or equivalent level related to fish management, conservation, and/or research. Transcript required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires knowledge of principles and procedures of PIT tagging and experience troubleshooting PIT tag readers and related components.
- Requires knowledge of basic fish biology including; marking and tagging techniques, biological research, anadromous fish life histories, basic aquaculture practices, GIS, salmonid management, fish and habitat relationships, population measurement techniques, electrofishing, field experience collecting adult and juvenile fish datasets.
- Requires computer skills including Microsoft office products statistical software, mobile networking, and software related to PIT tagging fish, including P4, 15, Biomark Device Manager, among others. Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to communicate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders with diverse backgrounds and interests.
Requires work history that reflects excellent attendance.
Requires the ability to install and operate PIT tag interrogation system electronics, peripherals, and corresponding computer programs and other electronic laboratory and field equipment.
Requires the ability to organize and prepare raw data for detailed written reports and technical studies.
Requires the ability to effectively communicate both written and verbally results from data collection and analysis, taking and giving direction to coworkers.
Requires the ability to coordinate, lead, or supervise technical or nontechnical volunteers or staff.
Requires the ability to apply research and statistical methods and techniques.
