POSITION: Forestry Technician II
SALARY: $21.82-25.80/ hour DOE
REPORTS TO: Forest Development Officer
LOCATION: Nespelem District, Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions: This is a non-exempt position. The incumbent of this position will assist professional Foresters, Forest Technicians, or Forestry Aids in the performance of a variety of technical tasks requiring basic knowledge of forest biology, related physical sciences, and the practical application of standard forestry methods and techniques. The primary job duties will be the Forest Development activities/contracts, PCT, Stocking surveys, Piling, Cone Collection. Knowledge of purchasing policies for payments, change orders, and signature process. Also assisting with managing tribal Cold Storage building seasonally. Timber sale duties of layout, marking, locating property lines/corners, cruising.
Qualifications
Education and Training:
- Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent, with some course work in mathematics and science (Biology, Chemistry, Physics, etc.). A strong math and science background is highly recommended. AND
- Three (3) season of experience and satisfactory performance (documented by performance appraisals) at the Forestry Technician I level (including training completed for an approved Training Plan). AND
- Certification of Log Scaling at Advanced level done yearly through BIA Check Scaler & carded/documented. Documentation in the form of a Certification for future Log Scaling roll outs/workshops will be required to verify experience. OR
- A Forestry Technician Degree or a two-year Natural Resource Management degree from an accredited college or institution, AND one year’s satisfactory experience at the Forestry Technician I grade level.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires familiarity with district forest environments/watersheds and transportation systems.
- Working knowledge of timber sale contracts, maps, ops plans and the requirements.
- Working knowledge of various Forest Development contract and the requirements.
- Working knowledge of the CCT’s 208 Forest Practices/Water Quality Act and the requirements.
- Knowledge of applicable Tribal and federal regulations as they pertain to forest management activities.
- Knowledge, skills and abilities to Log Scale at all mills, recording, managing, processing log scale data in timely manner for payment.
- Working knowledge of logging systems, and road layout and construction as they relate to timber sales.
- Knowledge in the use of tools and equipment specific to forestry operations.
- Knowledge in the operation of various types of Four Wheel drive, UTV’s/hooking trailer hitches.
- Knowledge of all Silviculture practices in implementing various prescriptions and site preps as needed.
- Knowledge of prescribed fire as a tool for meeting forest management objectives.
- Knowledge of wildfire suppression techniques, up to what would be expected performing as the Single Resource Boss Level.
- Knowledge of all eight coniferous species growing on the reservation of trees.
- Ability to conduct various forest surveys, Timber cruising, seedlings, insect/disease, vegetation/habitats.
- Ability to perform moderate to heavy physical tasks in the outside environment, under all types of weather and terrain conditions.
- Ability to make mathematical computations with speed and accuracy.
- Ability to keep routine written records, with respect to contract files, (completion reports, payment vouchers, logging progress reports, etc.).
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and the ability to apply guidelines to varied and specific situations.
- Ability to interact with Forest Development Contractors, Timber Sale Purchasers, Logging Contractors, Subcontractors, and their employees in a professional manner regarding contract matters.
- Ability to work flexible hours and overtime, as needed to meet work assignments.
- Skill in the use of various manual and power tools and equipment used in forestry operations.
- Working knowledge of various contracts, including but not limited to pre-commercial thinning, tree planting, small commercial timber sales, major timer sale contract, etc.
- Familiarity and working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheets, and data base software.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
