Job Summary
Histotech- Trainee - Grossing, Embedding and Special Stains
Obtain and process pathology specimens, maintaining positive specimen identification. Perform routine, special stain and Immunohistochemistry for histopathological and cytopathological tests, entry and recording functions in accordance with department policies and procedures.
Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise
Language Ability – Ability to read and interpret documents such as patient requisitions, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Math Ability – Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
Reasoning Ability – Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished either verbally or written. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Position Requirements (Education, Experience, Licensure/Certifications)
A. A., A. S., B. A. or B. S. degree. Degrees must include 6 credits in Biology, 6 credits in Chemistry and 12 credits in any Medical Laboratory related course. (Math and Physics credits are not included.)
3 year experience in a Histology laboratory within the last five years Demonstrates knowledge of and can perform IHC testing. Demonstrates knowledge of computer skills in word processing, Excel and database entry
Histotechnologist I: HT/HTL (ASCP) eligible and must take the ASCP certification exam within one year of hire
Tasks, Duties and Responsibilities
1. Interacts with physicians, employees and clients in a positive manner consistent with the mission and values of Bako Diagnostics.
2. Performs routine and non-routine activities involved in the preparation of slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologist(s), according to policies and procedures.
3. Ensure proper accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples.
4. Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.
5. Ensure proper tissue processing.
6. Embed processed tissue in paraffin.
7. Perform microtomy of embedded tissue.
8. Prepare slides for routine Hematoxylin & Eosin, Periodic Acid Schiff’s, Grocott’s Methenamine Silver and Fontana Masson staining.
9. Perform cover slipping of stained slides either manually or via automation.
10. Ability to prepare solutions and reagents for special stain procedures.
11. May be required to obtain and validate control tissue used in special stains.
12. Maybe required to perform special stain procedures.
13. Perform gross tissue examination (high complexity testing) set forth by the 1988 CLIA CFR 493. 1489.
14. Prepare solutions and reagents for IHC procedures.
15. Obtain and validate control material used in IHC procedures.
16. Perform IHC testing.
17. Perform filing of finished blocks and slides.
18. Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.\
19. Follow the laboratory's standard operating procedures for job-related responsibilities.
20. Differentiate acceptable and unacceptable processing, embedding, cutting and staining of tissue specimens.
21. May be required to develop, execute, or validate new procedures.
22. Capable of identifying problems that may affect test performance or reporting of test results and resolve or immediately report to Histology Supervisor or Technical Supervisor.
23. Ensure all safety, quality control and quality assurance standards are met.
24. Ensure compliance with all local, federal, CLIA and CAP regulations along with GLP and GCP practices.
25. Maintain a clean and well-organized work area.
Working Conditions
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and hazardous waste The employee is frequently exposed to human tissue. Personal protective equipment to lower the risk of exposure is provided by Bako Diagnostics
