Summary

A pharmacy Technician lead is responsible for components of technician training, drug purchasing, drug shortage management, drug recall audits, completion of controlled substance audits, and oversight of USP Chapter <>

and USP Chapter <>

compliance.

Pharmacy technicians are persons who are skilled or trained in the practical, technical and distributive aspects of pharmacy practice. In the inpatient and infusion areas, responsibilities include receiving medications, stocking, medication distribution including into automated drug dispensing devices, medication pulling and checking and sterile and non-sterile compounding, including compounding of hazardous drugs. Pharmacy technicians assist pharmacists in the routine, day to day functions of pharmacy practice. Through the performance of these tasks and through collaboration and teamwork with pharmacists, technicians allow pharmacists to engage in activities that optimize care and bring value to our patients. These activities primarily focus on the quality and the safety of the care provided. Technicians are supervised by licensed pharmacists who verify the accuracy of their work and coach their performance.

Position Reports To : Pharmacy Manager or Pharmacy Supervisor

Essential Functions

  • Receives product and ensures it is stored correctly in specified locations meeting all storage requirements refrigeration, room temp, frozen).
  • Upon receipt of an order, medication label and / or prompt in automation software, pulls appropriate medication for preparation or dispensing.
  • Prepares Intravenous (IV) admixtures and piggyback (PB) syringes in accordance with USP and USP standards.
  • Ensures appropriate cleaning and record keeping for sterile compounding areas.
  • Compounds non-sterile stock preparations according to established policies and procedures.
  • Fills narcotic requisitions while adhering to all policy and procedures related to narcotic documentation, distribution and record keeping.
  • Ensures safety in all steps of the medication use process by following institutional policies and procedures and industry floorstock and automated dispensing cabinets, requisitions and other order requests.
  • Ensures medications are made and ready for delivery at the appropriate time and based on the patient’s clinical status or pharmacist’s directive.
  • Assists in ordering pharmaceuticals, supplies and special orders on a routine and emergency basis.
  • Performs unit inspections and manages inventory to ensure product is being stored and used sequentially as to avoid outdating of medications.
  • Repackages bulk medications into unit dose packages and batches sterile compounds as needed.
  • Assists in organizing and maintaining the cleanliness of the department.
  • Answers and responds to telephone, doorbell and EPIC inbasket messaging in a courteous and timely manner.
  • Communicates positively and effectively in a collaborative manner with co-workers within and outside the department.

  • Trains new staff and precepts pharmacy students, and pharmacy technician students.
  • Lead Functions :

  • Supports other pharmacy technicians by filling in when needed, providing hands-on training, and coordinating training schedules.
  • Serves as the primary responsible pharmacy technician supporting operations while on duty.
  • Assists pharmacy manager in department scheduling, assigning tasks, and guiding pharmacy department staff.
  • Trains pharmacy learners on essential pharmacy functions.
  • Supports pharmacy team by directing, troubleshooting, and executing expert technical pharmacy assistance.
  • Attends department interviews for open positions.
  • Attends pharmacy or medication-related meetings where appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate Standards of Behavior and adhere to the Code of Conduct in all aspects of job performance at all times.

    Qualifications

    Required :

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Active Washington State Pharmacy Technician License.
  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT).
  • Minimum of 2 additional specialty / advanced certification through either the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA) which should be relevant to the practice area with a minimum of 1 including :
  • Sterile Compounding Certification through either Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) OR the National Pharmacy Technician Association (NPTA).Additional examples include :

    Hazardous Compounding Certification.

    Non-Sterile Compounding Certification.Controlled Substances Diversion Prevention.Hazardous Drug Management.Technician Product Verification

  • Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, accurate keyboarding, email communication and password management.
  • Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
  • Desired :

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree.
