Responsible for supporting the surgical patient flow by assisting the surgery staff with delegated tasks of direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse or surgical technologist. Scope of responsibility includes but is not limited to patient safety and satisfaction, assuring resources are readily available for each case, planning for next case needs, stocking core, ORs, supply, linen and other carts, sterilizing immediate use instruments, assisting with patient care, cleaning and preparing OR suite, and transporting of patients for perioperative services. Participates in process improvement, team building and respects hospital policies and procedures. Maintains a safe environment by implementing technical and aseptic practices according to AORN Standards and Central Washington Hospital standards, policies and procedures.
Position Reports To: Surgical Services Manager
- Address patients, visitors, families, and co-workers in a pleasant and respectful manner: display courtesy at all times.
- Maintain confidentiality of all patient-hospital or physician related information.
- Demonstrate a pleasing disposition and sensitivity to visitors', families, and co-workers' needs.
- Complete case carts upon arrival from CS and places in proximity to assigned OR.
- Monitor the OR tracking screen for scheduling changes.
- Transport patients and obtain patient beds as requested.
- Clean and prepare ORs between surgical procedures.
- Using proper body mechanics, assemble positioning equipment in accordance with recommended manufacturer’s direction such as but not limited to OSI table, shoulder chair, OR beds.
- Monitor supply inventory, order and restock central cores and outlying storage locations as volume dictates:
- Prioritize requests and required supplies and equipment based on level of need (emergent, urgent, elective).
- Perform daily biological testing for each core autoclave and document results in log. If a positive result occurs, notify charge nurse and redo the test. If a second positive occurs, notify the charge nurse and post an out of order note on autoclave.
- Sterilize requested immediate use instruments and load autoclave in prescribed manner, set controls to specified time and temperature according to the type of items being sterilized. Complete appropriate documentation record prior to sterilization; read and initial autoclave graph and log to verify that all requirements have been met.
- Inform Manager and Charge Nurse of instrument and/or equipment failure.
- Observe Standard Precautions (gloves, gown, mask, eye protection) when handling any hazardous/ bio material.
- Perform other related duties as required such as but not limited to monitoring expiration dates, filling specimen containers with formalin.
- Deliver specimens and cultures to lab; pick up blood products as requested.
- Monitor and manage cleanliness of lounges, work areas and returns dishes to food services.
- Required to maintain active Basic Life Support (CPR) certification.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Must be a team-oriented, self-starting individual able to work under demanding situations.
- Must be currently certified in CPR and recertified annually.
- Must have effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Must possess basic computer skills related to Windows navigation, mouse usage, keyboarding, email communication and password management.
- ORT program.
- 2 years Central Service experience or related field or formal training as Central Service Technician.
- Thorough knowledge of aseptic technique, understand sterilization procedures, infection control requirements, and a basic knowledge of surgical procedures, terminology, equipment, and instruments.
- Word processing experience.
