DESCRIPTION: The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) assists in the clinical management of the Nursing Department. The ADON provides support to the Director of Nursing in planning, communicating, implementing, supervising and evaluating the administrative and clinical activities of the Nursing Department. The ADON serves in the role of Director of Nursing in his or her absence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Supervisory Duties:
- Assists in the development and implementation of nursing department policies and procedures.
- Assists in the planning and conducting of nursing staff meetings to encourage participation in problem solving and understanding/clarifying new policies and procedures.
- Arranges for interview and selects applicants for clinical nursing positions.
- Assists in the determination of the numbers and levels of nursing personnel to be employed, in accordance with state and federal minimal rules, standards and acuity levels.
- Serves as an administrative resource and leader in the facility in the absence of the Director of Nursing.
- Assists with the assurance that nursing policies and practices comply with the regulatory requirement and staff compliance.
- Assists with performance evaluations for nursing staff.
- Directs and supervises the scheduling of the nursing staff within established guidelines for the allocating of personnel.
- Assists to maintain the day-to-day nursing schedule.
- Provides direct oversight of nursing units.
Clinical Duties:
- Conducts daily rounds on the nursing units.
- Assures staff are implementing care plans, delivering care appropriately and recognizing changes in a resident’s status.
- Assists in problem resolution amongst staff, residents, family and visitors.
- Participates in activities related to facility inspection or investigation by regulatory or accrediting agencies.
- Serves as the facility Infection Preventionist.
- Conducts care conferences with residents, family members and staff.
- Fulfills on call obligation and floor staff coverage to ensure minimum staffing levels are met.
- Oversees nursing care for residents at the nursing facility.
Educational Duties:
- Participates with the planning of in-service training programs, including skills training, for professional and non-professional nursing staff.
- Participates in the presentation of in-service educational programs.
- Provides informal education to nursing personnel as necessary.
- Ensures all staff are up to date and compliant on infection prevention guidelines, including PPE guidelines.
- Represents facility and/or nursing department to outside agencies and/or the community.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS ASSIGNED.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Maintain absolute confidentiality of information as it pertains to employees, residents and vendors.
- Employ tact and courtesy when interacting with employees, residents and the public.
- Ability to balance multiple projects with varying degrees of interruptions.
- Exhibit flexibility in adjusting to changes in tasks, as special projects take priority.
- Working knowledge of CMS requirements, regulation and reimbursement under Medicaid and Medicare.
- Full access to Health Information Records.
- Access to Computer fields that are limited to clinical fields.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- At least three years clinical nursing experience.
- Nursing leadership/management experience preferred.
- Valid LPN or RN license.
- CPR Certification.
- Infection Preventionist Certification.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- May come into contact with infectious diseases.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS:
- Must be able to lift at least 50lbs.
