What are the responsibilities and job description for the Residential Instructor position at Conklin Davis Center for the Visually Impaired?
Dormitory Instructional Aides are responsible to the Assistant Director. Job duties include matters related to the residential life of students. Aides are expected to help create a wholesome, clean, safe and respectful environment for all residents. Hours may vary, but generally, this s/he is expected to work during evening and weekend hours. Very late night and very early morning hours may also be required at times.
EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

1. Assists with supervised instruction in activities of daily living.
2. Assists with supervised instruction in recreational activities and social skills.
3. Assists with sighted guide assistance and/ or verbal direction and information to students on community outings.
4. Assists with supervision, direction and student assistance during mealtimes.
5. Assists with supervised instruction in the use of equipment such as the, adapted recording equipment, CC.TV., TTY, clocks, watches etc.
6. Assists in preparation of instructional materials in a variety of media for visually handicapped students (large print, Braille, tape etc.)
7. Keep work records, equipment and teaching-storage areas in order.
8. Take part in student activities as requested, attend staff meetings and planning sessions, and prepare written reports.
9. Provide reading services for visually impaired students and staff members.
10. Serve as driver for visually impaired students and staff members.
11. Carefully document any accidents or behavioral incident reports.
12. Assists with security and maintenance of the building.
13. Light maintenance of dormitory rooms and Center apartments, as needed.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma. Experience working with mentally or physically disabled individuals and/ or Human Services education is desirable.
Includes and not limited to the ability to seek, accept and use supervision effectively. Ability to serve students without becoming emotionally or subjectively involved with students in a manner not contributing to their growth, development and well-being. Ability to organize work. Ability to maintain excellent human relations skills under stress. Display a personality make-up capable of meeting the demands and emotional stress of the job in a creative, realistic, and optimistic way.
