Position Overview:
We are seeking a motivated and passionate Middle School Health & PE Teacher to join our team in Washington, DC. This educator will be responsible for promoting physical fitness, health education, and overall student well-being through engaging and inclusive instruction. The ideal candidate will foster a positive, active, and student-centered environment that encourages lifelong healthy habits, teamwork, and personal growth.
Key Responsibilities:Physical Education Instruction:
- Design and implement engaging, developmentally appropriate PE lessons that promote physical fitness, motor skills, and teamwork.
- Teach a variety of sports, activities, and fitness programs that accommodate all skill levels.
- Encourage sportsmanship, leadership, and positive peer interactions through structured activities.
- Ensure a safe and supportive environment for all students, adhering to best practices in injury prevention and physical activity.
Health Education Instruction:
- Develop and deliver standards-based health lessons that cover nutrition, mental health, substance abuse prevention, personal hygiene, and overall wellness.
- Facilitate discussions on healthy decision-making, emotional well-being, and responsible behaviors.
- Incorporate interactive teaching strategies to engage students in real-world health topics.
- Promote social-emotional learning (SEL) strategies to support students' mental and emotional development.
Classroom & Behavior Management:
- Establish and maintain a structured, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
- Implement positive behavior interventions and supports to encourage student engagement and participation.
- Foster a culture of respect, cooperation, and self-discipline in both physical and health education settings.
Student Assessment & Growth:
- Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student progress in physical fitness and health literacy.
- Provide feedback and individualized support to help students set and achieve personal health and fitness goals.
- Analyze student performance data to adapt instruction and improve outcomes.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
- Work closely with administrators, counselors, and fellow educators to support student well-being.
- Participate in school-wide wellness initiatives, extracurricular activities, and athletic programs.
- Stay updated on best practices in health and physical education through professional development and training.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Health Education, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid teaching certification in PE and/or Health (or ability to obtain one).
- Experience teaching middle school students in a physical education or health setting preferred.
- Strong understanding of physical fitness principles, health education standards, and SEL strategies.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of injury prevention, CPR/First Aid, and adaptive physical education is a plus.
