Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and passionate Middle School SPED ELA Teacher to join our team in Washington, DC. This educator will provide differentiated English Language Arts instruction while supporting students with diverse learning needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in special education and literacy instruction, using inclusive teaching strategies to foster a love for reading and writing in all learners.
Key Responsibilities:Special Education & Differentiated Instruction:
- Develop and implement IEP-aligned ELA lessons that support students’ individual needs.
- Use differentiated instruction, assistive technology, and multisensory approaches to enhance literacy skills.
- Provide small-group and individualized instruction to support reading comprehension, writing development, and language acquisition.
- Collaborate with general education teachers to create inclusive learning environments.
ELA Curriculum & Instruction:
- Plan and deliver engaging, standards-aligned ELA lessons that promote critical thinking and literacy.
- Utilize evidence-based reading interventions to support struggling readers.
- Incorporate phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and writing strategies into daily instruction.
- Foster a literacy-rich classroom that encourages independent reading, discussion, and creative expression.
Classroom Management & Student Support:
- Create a structured, inclusive, and supportive learning environment.
- Implement behavioral interventions and supports to help students succeed academically and socially.
- Work closely with the Student Support Team, families, and specialists to ensure students receive necessary accommodations and modifications.
Assessment & Data-Driven Instruction:
- Use formative and summative assessments to track student progress and adjust instruction.
- Maintain accurate documentation of student growth, accommodations, and IEP goals.
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and strategies for support.
Collaboration & Professional Development:
- Work closely with SPED teams, ELA educators, and administrators to enhance instructional practices.
- Participate in IEP meetings, professional development, and school-wide initiatives to support student success.
- Advocate for inclusive, equitable literacy opportunities for all learners.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, English, or a related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
- Valid teaching certification in Special Education (or ability to obtain one).
- Experience working with students with diverse learning needs in a middle school setting.
- Strong understanding of literacy development, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and IEP implementation.
- Proficiency with assistive technology, adaptive learning strategies, and behavior intervention plans.
- Passion for creating an inclusive and engaging literacy experience for all students.
