What are the responsibilities and job description for the Special Education Coordinator position at Conroe Independent School District?
To maintain and support a student centered special education program that meets the needs of all disabled students in the district. To provide support services for special education to district administrators, teachers, parents, and community. To support and maintain a special education program in compliance with district, state, and federal mandates.
- Facilitate delivery of instruction and related services for students with disabilities through collaboration with school administrators, teachers, and related services and support personnel, non-certified personnel and parents.
- Work with school personnel to assure that appropriate Individual Education Plans (IEP) are implemented to meet the needs of students with disabilities.
- Supervise identification, evaluation, IEP development and placement for students with disabilities.
- Respond to issues involving staff and/or parents utilizing problem-solving and conflict resolution strategies.
- Assist in performing personnel functions i.e. interviewing, evaluating, supervising, etc. to recruit and maintain highly qualified staff.
- Utilize District studies, research, state of the art programs to improve curriculum, instruction, and staff development.
- Work with teachers and appropriate staff to develop, maintain, and revise curriculum documents based on systematic review within state and District guidelines and the District mission statement and goals.
- Encourage incorporation of appropriate use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
- Utilize available test results to assist in program evaluation.
- Recommend policies, regulations, procedures as appropriate; prepares and maintains necessary reports and/or descriptive statistics of the assigned discipline area.
- Identify short and long-range goals for assigned discipline area based on assessment of need, goals of the curriculum department, and the District mission statement and goals.
- Serve as an advocate for the development of programming designed to meet the needs of the students with disabilities.
- Encourage the inclusion of students with disabilities in all school programs and activities.
- Serve as an advocate for persons with disabilities in the community.
- Demonstrate skill in conflict resolution.
- Consult with principals to ensure that all special education personnel have sufficient time to participate in staff development activities.
- Consult with building principals concerning the assignment and supervision of diagnosticians, LSSPs, SLPs, special education teachers and teacher assistants.
- Work with principals to provide enough time for all personnel to complete their assigned responsibilities and duties.
- Support staff through professional development and staff development activities.
- Provide technical assistance regarding special education and related services to school personnel and parents.
- Aid in the management of the District’s special education program and facilities.
- Ensure that programs are cost effective and funds are managed prudently.
- Compile budgets and cost estimates based upon documented program needs as directed.
- Implement the policies established by federal and state law, State Board of Education rules, and the local Board policy in the area of special education.
- Assume responsibility for compiling, maintaining and filing all reports, records and other documents required.
- Help provide leadership in the formulation and implementation of contracts for eligible disabled students receiving services outside of the District.
- Aid in the design and equipping of physical facilities for disabled individuals.
- Promote special education as an integral part of the total educational process.
- Develop and maintains strong professional relationships with regular education personnel.
- Keep District personnel, Board members, parents and the community informed about special education policies, programs, and procedures, new developments, and legal requirements.

- Ensure that teacher expectations are effective in furthering the teaching/learning process and environment.
- Support the District and campus procedures that enhance positive self-esteem.
- Ensure teacher expectations and student management procedures are developmentally appropriate.
- Keep informed of legal issues and school law as they pertain to special education and student affairs. Attend seminars, conferences, or professional classes.
- Subscribe to and read professional journals.
- Keep informed of research, disseminate ideas to other professional, identify trends and opportunities and apply this information as appropriate.
Develop training opportunities and programs for the purpose of improving the performance of staff members.
- Demonstrate steps taken for professional growth.
- Observe professional and ethical standards in accordance with generally accepted community standards.
- Maintain membership and active participation in professional organizations.
- Work with community agencies to provide services for students with disabilities.
- Provide opportunities for parent and community input on program matters.

- Full-time teaching experience in a special education setting
Education/Certification:
- Master’s degree in the field of education and/or content
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate
- Certification as a Special Education Teacher
- Mid-Management, Principal or Supervisor
Special Knowledge/Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement staff development
- Knowledge of public laws and district procedures regarding special education students and programs
- Working knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and staff development
- Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness
