What we're looking for :

TransitMatters seeks an Executive Director to lead the organization in its day-to-day operations, implement our strategic vision, fundraise, and interact with volunteers, staff, the Board, media, and the public at large. This role requires regular in-person activities in and around Boston, MA. TransitMatters is fiscally sponsored by Conservation Law Foundation (CLF), which provides administrative and personnel services. The Executive Director will perform duties exclusively on behalf of TransitMatters with support from CLF's administrative team.

Who we are and what we do :

TransitMatters has brought a technical, people-centric approach to improving public transit in and around Greater Boston for nearly a decade. We offer new perspectives, unite transit advocates, and inform the public. We utilize a high level of critical analysis to advocate for plans and policies that promote convenient, effective, and equitable transportation for everyone.

What the Executive Director will do :

Reporting directly to the TransitMatters Board of Directors and the Board's duly elected officers, the Executive Director will have primary management and oversight of TransitMatters, with key responsibilities in public and media relations, campaign management, strategic direction, fundraising and funding solutions, staff recruitment and oversight, volunteer relations, and overall day-to-day management of the organization.

Specifically, the Executive Director will :

  • Serve as the public spokesperson for TransitMatters, engaging with media and representing the organization at high-level meetings and decision-making tables, including with elected officials, government, agency leaders, and among other advocacy organizations.
  • Collaborate with campaign and communications staff to develop strategic work plans and impactful content strategies.
  • Facilitate the Board's work in defining organizational strategic vision, goals and priorities.
  • Apply and execute the organization's strategic vision, ensuring alignment with its mission and goals.
  • Identify and secure diverse funding sources, including :

Writing grants and building relationships with funders.

  • Pursuing fee-for-service contracts via RFPs and pitching innovative ideas to potential clients.
  • Working with a volunteer development team and staff resources toward funding goals.
  • Provide thought leadership on public transit issues to guide advocacy efforts and organizational priorities.
  • Ensure fiscal health by working with the Treasurer, Finance Committee, and fiscal sponsor staff on budgeting and financial management.
  • Supervise and manage staff, including hiring and supporting interns, while overseeing daily operations.
  • Work with CLF HR and Administrative teams to onboard and offboard staff and interns and manage HR and finance matters.
  • Lead legislative outreach, develop the organization's legislative agenda, and collaborate with MBTA, state, and municipal leadership.
  • Collaborate with, advise, and support the Board of Directors in the development and execution of our strategic direction and focus.
  • Develop and implement strategies to cultivate, engage and support volunteers effectively.
  • The ideal candidate will have a combination of many of the following qualifications :

  • 5 years of relevant work experience in policy research, advocacy, urban planning, and / or engineering; internships and volunteer work may count towards this experience.
  • Knowledge of topics relevant to TransitMatters work including transportation planning, mode shift, fare policy, and land use.
  • Ability to explain and communicate complex transportation and related topics to a wide audience, both verbally and in writing.
  • Experience in leading a team as well as with non-profit management, able to foster a positive team culture to support both staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to fundraise from a variety of sources including foundations, individuals, and fee-for-service work.
  • Knowledge and understanding of equity frameworks and how to incorporate them into TransitMatters analysis.
  • Public relations and speaking, networking, and relationship building skills.
  • Understanding of the Boston region and state wide framework of transportation agencies, governance, funding and oversight, including the local, state and federal political levers.

    This is a full-time, exempt position with an annual salary range of $90,000 to $100,000.
