Purpose:
This is an AmeriCorps Position within an Arizona Conservation Corps. The AIM Crew Member position supports the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) program, which is designed to evaluate the health of public lands. The program serves public lands and surrounding communities by ensuring sustainable land management practices through scientific data collection.
AIM Crew Members play a vital role in conducting ecological monitoring by collecting vegetation and soil data on BLM lands. This position provides hands-on experience in fieldwork, natural resource conservation, and environmental data collection, offering an opportunity for early-career professionals to develop their skills in botany, soil science, and land management.
Description of Duties:
- Collect vegetation and soil data using BLM’s AIM methodology.
- Identify plant species and record data on vegetation cover, species composition, and soil stability.
- Navigate using GPS, digital maps, and compasses in remote field locations.
- Enter field data into an ArcGIS database using ruggedized tablets.
- Maintain and catalog botanical specimens throughout the season.
- Participate in planning, field logistics, and maintaining field equipment.
- Hike long distances in rugged terrain while carrying necessary equipment.
- Collaborate with BLM staff, fellow AmeriCorps members, and AZCC supervisors.
- Ensure compliance with safety protocols and AmeriCorps regulations, including prohibitions on political and advocacy activities during service.
Qualifications:
- Must be:
- A United States citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident alien.
- Between 17 and 30 years old (35 for veterans).
- A high school graduate (or working towards completion before using the education award).
- Willing to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
- Additional Preferred Qualifications:
- College coursework or experience in ecology, botany, plant science, soil science, environmental science, or related fields.
- Strong interest in ecological monitoring, land conservation, and fieldwork.
- Ability to hike 6 miles per day on uneven terrain while carrying up to 40 lbs.
- Familiarity with navigation tools (Field Maps, Avenza, GAIA GPS, compass).
- Self-motivated with strong problem-solving and teamwork skills.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work long hours in remote field conditions with exposure to extreme temperatures, rain, and wildlife.
- Requires lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling objects up to 40 pounds.
- Extended periods of walking, standing, crouching, or stooping on uneven terrain.
- Requires spending multiple nights camping in remote locations during field hitches.
Time Requirements:
- Service is typically Monday–Friday, 10-hour days, but may vary based on fieldwork needs.
- Crew members will be required to camp in remote locations for multiple nights during field hitches.
- Hitch schedule is typically either 8 days on/6 days off or 4 days on/3 days off
- Participation in national, state, or local service events may be required.
Orientation and Training:
- Members will complete an AmeriCorps orientation, covering prohibited activities and service expectations.
- Initial training includes:
- BLM’s AIM methodology and field protocols.
- Navigation and safety procedures.
- Data collection and GIS software training.
- Wilderness First Aid (if applicable).
Benefits:
- Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $1,565.08 upon successful completion.
- Living Allowance of $600 per week.
- Additional Benefit of $100 per week for housing or food support
- $18 /day food allowance while camping in the field.

- Performance will be evaluated based on:
- Completion of required hours and service assignments.
- Data accuracy and adherence to protocols.
- Crew collaboration and professionalism.
- Required reporting includes bi-weekly timesheets and progress reports.
