Purpose:

  • Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps’ Mission

    It is the mission of the Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps to "lead our nations back to cultural and ecological well being." The Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps has offices in Acoma, Albuquerque, Gallup (Navajo Nation), Zuni, and Hopi. Ancestral Lands Conservation Corps serves local Indigenous communities in the regions we operate.

  • This position serves as a trainee Natural Resources Specialist in a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) office at any organizational level. The incumbent performs developmental assignments that includes performing a variety of professional and technical functions related to natural resource management. At this grade level, work assignments typically involve issues or problems of a procedural or factual nature and the incumbent works with a higher graded specialist or the supervisor to resolve such issues in accordance with established methods, guidelines and precedents. At this developmental level, the incumbent receives specific instructions for new or unusual assignments and refers any deviations from established methods to the supervisor for additional guidance.

Description of Duties:

Technical Advice and Assistance (100%)

  • Under the guidance of the supervisor and with the assistance of other technical resource specialists, the incumbent will assist other specialists in efforts to plan, carry out, and report on field inventories to evaluate the health of biological resources. The incumbent will assist with the analysis inventory data to identify any impacts or concerns.
  • Assist with specific natural resource programs projects. The incumbent may assist with the setup and implement new procedures for recurring well precedented natural resource improvement projects in coordination with other more senior resource specialists and/or the supervisor.
  • Assists with documents, evaluates, and reports changes in natural resources status. Assists more senior resources specialists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of resource management plans. Aids in the coordination of studies, mitigation, or monitoring with independent contractors. Learns to utilize Geographic Information Systems and Database Management Systems (i.e., Access, Excel) in fulfillment of duties.
  • Learns to serve on an interdisciplinary team of specialists that will address local office natural resource issues and problems. Learns to collaborate with other BLM specialists and the supervisor that are responsible for writing and reviewing natural resource issues for environmental compliance and planning documents. The incumbent will also learn to work with other government representatives, external representatives of private and public institutions, public land user groups, and others on natural resources issues.
  • Assists with collecting, entering, and maintaining natural resources monitoring data according to BLM and program standards. Learns to ensure data quality and integrity by adherence to quality control standards and procedures. Assist in preparing routine natural resources reports, to document compliance and/or noncompliance with multiple use actions and work with senior resource specialists and/or supervisor to prepare appropriate documentation.
  • Support Field Office programs and activities not specifically identified.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.

Knowledge Required by the Position

  • Professional knowledge of theories, principles and concepts related to ecological principles, ecosystem management, and the interrelationship between biological and physical components within an ecosystem.
  • Professional knowledge of biological components of ecosystems such as plant and animal communities, range and wildlife habitat conditions, watershed, riparian and physical components and processes such as water quality, soil erosion, and climate.
  • Professional knowledge of related disciplines such as natural resources management, wildlife biology, botany, range resources, riparian management and their interrelationships sufficient to utilize a holistic approach to ecosystem management.
  • Knowledge of the principles and guidance provided by the National Environmental Policy Act, Endangered Species Act, the Federal Land Policy and Management Act, the Taylor Grazing Act, and related natural resource regulations and laws.
  • Knowledge of and skill utilizing an electronic device sufficient to enter and retrieve information from databases; produce basic graphics and simple maps; and compile spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of and skill in using GIS and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) technologies sufficient to collect field data and to transfer data to databases for analysis.
  • Knowledge of and skill in reading maps sufficient to navigate to remote field locations. Skill in problem solving and maintaining good work relationships.
  • Skill and ability to safely operate two- and four-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs

Time Requirements:


  • Typically, this position is expected to serve May 2025 to January 2026, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Note: Stated are required by AmeriCorps. Programs may add additional qualifications

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Benefits:

  • Segal AmeriCorps Education Award of $6,495.00
  • Living Allowance of $55.00 per week.
  • Additional Benefit of $200.00 per week.
  • Healthcare Coverage if Eligible

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
