About Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC)

Conservation Corps North Carolina (CCNC) partners with public land managers to engage youth, young adults, and veterans in meaningful conservation service projects. Through hands-on work in the field, CCNC members develop skills in natural resource management, outdoor leadership, and community engagement while improving trails, restoring habitats, and enhancing recreation areas. CCNC is an AmeriCorps-affiliated program dedicated to building the next generation of conservation leaders through service, education, and teamwork.


About The Croatan National Forest

The Croatan National Forest is one of four National Forests in North Carolina and is unique in its diverse ecosystems, including pine forests, saltwater estuaries, bogs, and pocosins (raised swamps). It is the only forest east of the Mississippi River with true pocosins. Bordered on three sides by tidal rivers and the Bogue Sound, the Croatan is rich in biodiversity, supporting species such as black bears, red-cockaded woodpeckers, and Venus flytraps. Visitors enjoy recreational opportunities such as hiking, paddling, and wildlife viewing in this water-defined landscape.


Purpose:

This AmeriCorps position will support the Croatan National Forest’s recreation and trails program, ensuring public lands remain accessible, safe, and well-maintained. This role includes visitor engagement, trail and facility maintenance, safety monitoring, and conservation stewardship.


Duties & Responsibilities

  • Engage with visitors to provide information about recreation regulations, opportunities, and safety.
  • Maintain contact with Campground Hosts, ensuring compliance with regulations and reporting violations.
  • Maintain and rehabilitate recreation areas, trails, and facilities according to Forest Service standards.
  • Clean roadside and backcountry dispersed sites, naturalizing impacted areas as needed.
  • Install and maintain signs for recreation sites, trails, and safety messaging.
  • Assist in the removal of hazard trees in recreation sites and along trails.
  • Support the implementation of trail and wilderness bridge construction and maintenance projects.
  • Monitor trail conditions and usage to ensure sustainability.
  • Perform routine maintenance and care of assigned vehicles and field equipment.
  • Work in varied conditions, including inclement weather, with minimal daily supervision.
  • Represent the Forest Service and CCNC in a professional and respectful manner.
  • Maintain a positive and helpful attitude while interacting with visitors and team members.

Qualifications:

  • United States citizen, United States national, or a lawful permanent resident alien
  • At least 17 years of age
  • Has received a high school diploma or equivalency certificate; or has not dropped out of elementary or secondary school to enroll as an AmeriCorps participant, and agrees to obtain a high school diploma or its equivalent prior to using the education award
  • Agrees to provide information to establish eligibility and to complete a National Service Criminal History Check.
  • Interest in conservation, public land stewardship, and outdoor recreation management.
  • Saw Certification (B Sawyer) required for hazard tree removal
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to work outdoors in rugged conditions and inclement weather.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently while following safety guidelines.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to interact professionally with the public.
  • Experience with hand tools, trail maintenance, or outdoor labor preferred.
  • Must be able to safely drive government vehicles, including trailers (training provided).

Time Requirements:


  • Typically, this position is expected to serve Monday to Friday, but exact service schedules may vary. A half hour lunch break will not be counted towards AmeriCorps service
  • Member may be required to participate in national, state, or local service projects or events as part of their service term.

Orientation and Training:

  • Member will receive an orientation that includes training on AmeriCorps prohibited and unallowable activities.

Evaluation and Reporting:

As an AmeriCorps member, performance will be evaluated on whether the member has completed the required number of hours, the member has satisfactorily completed assignments, and if the member has met other performance criteria that were clearly communicated at the beginning of the term of service.

Reporting requirements include, but are not limited to, bi-weekly timesheets and accomplishment tracking.
