SCHOOL COUNSELOR INTERN
Description of Position
Under the direct supervision of the Mental Health Coordinator, who is a Licensed Mental Health Clinician (LMHC)
Responsibilities :
provides counseling services, both individual and small groups to students.
Counseling intern will work with students across grade levels, potential caseload from K1-8th grade. Typical caseload includes at least 6-8 individual students and at least 2-3 groups, dependent on the number of days on-site.
Group and individual focus depend on the overall need and / or if the student has an IEP, continuing to support their SEL goal(s).
School interns will collaborate with teachers, parents, and other staff persons, as needed to effectively support students on caseload.
School counseling Interns will receive individual and group supervision. With the support of their supervisor, they will be responsible for exploring and building effective curricula, based on the need of the student(s).
They will learn about the IEP process, as well as create SEL goal(s) and objectives for students who receive counseling services per an IEP.
They will also be responsible for completing, quarterly progress reports for students who have counseling services on their IEP.
There will be opportunities to learn about crisis interventions and screening, by observing a school clinician.
Interns will be supported in learning how to write informal and formal clinical notes for school-based counseling.
The population of students is very diverse, and cultural competency is continuously explored through supervision.
