Position Summary Information

Primary Purpose

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive environmental health and safety programs to ensure a safe and compliant campus environment. This role involves developing and managing safety protocols, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and Implement EHS Programs: Create and enforce policies and procedures to promote a culture of safety and environmental responsibility.
  • Compliance Management: Ensure the university complies with all relevant environmental, health, and safety regulations.
  • Risk Assessment: Conduct regular safety audits and risk assessments to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
  • Hazardous Waste Management: Oversee the proper handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous waste materials to minimize environmental impact and sure compliance with regulations.
  • Environmental Audits: Conduct regular environmental audits and inspections to identify potential environmental hazards and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  • Training and Education: Develop and deliver training programs for faculty, staff, and students on EHS topics, including but not limited to emergency response, hazardous materials handling, and workplace safety.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of environmental compliance activities, incidents, and corrective actions, and prepare reports for regulatory agencies as required.
  • Incident Investigation: Lead investigations into accidents and incidents, identifying root causes, and recommend preventative measures.
  • Emergency Response: Coordinate emergency response activities and develop emergency preparedness plans.
  • Regulation Liaison: Serve as the primary contract with regulatory agencies and ensure timely reporting and documentation.
  • Sustainability Initiatives: Support the university’s sustainability goals by managing waste reduction, pollution prevention and resource conservation programs.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records of safety inspection, training sessions, waste and compliance activities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in occupational safety and health or a related field.
  • Three (3) years of work experience in occupational, environmental (hazardous materials and waste management), health, and safety.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in environmental science, occupational health, safety management or five (5) years of experience in Environmental Health & Safety preferably in an academic or research setting.
  • Strong knowledge of EHS regulations, excellent communication and training skills.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

May require extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional to frequent standing, walking, walking across campus, project sites, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting to 50 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel

Work is performed both outdoors and indoors, which requires frequent walking, standing, simple grasping, climbing stairs, stooping, lifting, and reaching. Work performed during standard business hours. Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines. Occasional to frequent visits to project sites.

Exposure to hazardous materials. Must be eligible to wear a respirator.

Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.

Hiring Range $73,710.00 - $101,362.00 per year. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer. Background Check Statement
