Consultants in Laboratory Medicine of Greater Toledo a Sonic Healthcare USA partner, provides pathology services in the northwest Ohio and southwest Michigan area. We are recruiting a Grossing Technician in the Surgical Pathology department for our Toledo, Ohio location.
Job description - Grossing Technician - Surgical Pathology
Position Summary:
Under the indirect supervision of a Pathologist or Pathologist Assistant performs specific tasks and duties to include but not limited to the macroscopic gross description, dissection and processing of designated surgical specimens. The level (complexity) of specimens grossed will depend on the level of competency of the Grossing Technician and the needs of the department.
Required Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Education: An earned associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology, obtained from an accredited institution, OR At least 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution.
This education must include 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination.
Experience:
Minimum – Two years laboratory experience.
Preferred – One year experience performing gross dissection and dictation of surgical biopsy specimens
Essential Key Responsibilities:
- Performs all technical aspects of grossing and dictating tissue specimens using a variety of laboratory materials and equipment under direct supervision of Pathologist or Pathologist Assistant.
- Ensures specimen integrity upon arrival and throughout the entire process.
- Dictates a gross description for each specimen including, but not limited to anatomical site, size, color, weight, dimensions, count, volume, cut techniques, abnormal findings, dissects and prepares tissue for cassettes.
- Escalates non-routine complicated specimens to a Pathologist.
- Maintains accurate work records.
- Prepares dissected tissue specimens and place into cassettes.
- Loads prepared cassettes into Tissue Processors.
- Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance Procedures.
- May label requisitions, specimen containers, and cassettes.
- Operates, cleans, and sterilizes laboratory equipment, glassware, instruments and workstation.
- Disposes of hazardous chemical wastes per regulatory guidelines.
- Maintains strictest confidentiality.
- Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals.
- Adherence to CAP, CLIA, State Regulations, HIPAA, Safety and OSHA Regulations.
Work Environment:
Exposure to infection from disease-bearing specimens or patients. Exposure to risk of blood borne/airborne disease. Must wear protective equipment (gloves, gowns/lab coats, eye protection, face protection ). Subject to cuts from microtome knives and injury from sharps. Exposure to hazards for electrical/mechanical/power equipment. Possible exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens. Possible exposure to toxic/flammable/explosive chemicals and gases. Subject to injury from moving parts of equipment. Moderate noise environment. May require judgement/action that could result in death of patient. Subject to many interruptions. Subject to stressful situations.
