Desktop Support Engineer
Position Overview

The Desktop Support Engineer will provide first-level technical support for both local and remote users, assisting with IT-managed systems such as desktop and laptop computers, mobile devices, and other related technologies. This role also involves managing user accounts in Active Directory, performing basic server administration tasks, and supporting various software applications.

Strong communication skills and a patient, customer-focused attitude are essential for this role. The Desktop Support Engineer will be responsible for explaining technical issues and solutions in clear, non-technical language to team members. The position requires excellent troubleshooting abilities, focusing on quick resolutions to minimize disruption to users. Additionally, they will help develop technical documentation for end-users and record issues and solutions within the ticketing system.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Support:

  • Install, configure, and maintain Windows 10 and 11 operating systems on desktops and laptops, utilizing both manual installations and scripted imaging.
  • Build and manage desktop images for automated installations.
  • Monitor and address virus, malware, and spam-related issues across the network.
  • Provide user provisioning and account management in both local Active Directory and cloud-based Azure AD/Exchange Online environments.
  • Support and maintain phones, mobile devices, desktops, laptops, printers, and other hardware.
  • Ensure systems remain operational and manage file permissions in Active Directory.
  • Possess a thorough understanding of IPv4 addressing and subnetting.
  • Knowledgeable in server management, including NTFS file permissions.
  • Expertise in Group Policy Objects (GPO) and group permission management.
  • Experience with automated patch management tools and processes.
  • Basic knowledge of backup systems and procedures.

Project Leadership & Continuous Improvement:

  • Provide regular updates on project progress to team leadership.
  • Assist in defining project requirements, timelines, and deliverables.
  • Identify areas for process optimization and implement best practices where possible.
  • Lead initiatives focused on standardizing and improving operational processes.
  • Ensure all projects are completed according to set deadlines.

Other Responsibilities:

  • Willingness to work during weekends, holidays, or outside of regular business hours when necessary to meet operational needs.
  • Participate in on-call support rotation for after-hours technical support as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, MIS, or a related field preferred.
  • At least 4 years of experience in advanced desktop and laptop support.
  • MCP certification required; MCSA Windows/Server certification preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work efficiently in a structured, supervised environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to lift or move items weighing up to 25 pounds as needed.
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% if necessary.
  • A strong customer-service mindset.

Technical & Physical Skills

  • Proficiency in using a computer keyboard and software tools.
  • Ability to gather, organize, and verify information, maintaining accurate records and logs.
  • Capable of operating standard office equipment and communicating effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Skilled in research, analysis, and interpretation of data.
  • Able to investigate issues, evaluate options, and recommend solutions.
  • Basic understanding of mathematical concepts like addition and subtraction.

Physical & Environmental Requirements

  • Must be able to sit, stand, or walk for extended periods and view computer screens for prolonged durations.
  • Capable of performing tasks such as reading, speaking, listening, and writing.
  • Able to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.
  • Perform repetitive motions, bending, reaching, and other physical tasks typical in an office environment.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
