The Grayling Generating Station plant is a 38 MW biomass-fueled renewable energy power plant that produces electricity. The fuel consists primarily of bark and sawdust from local lumber mills and the non-marketable biomass from lumbering operations.
The power produced supports the health of the forests, mitigates greenhouse gases (is “carbon neutral”), conserves landfill space and supports the electric grid in northern Michigan. The electric output is sold pursuant to a long-term power purchase agreement with Consumers Energy Company. This facility can produce enough electricity to power approximately 38,000 homes. Commercial operation began in 1992.
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Technician performs a variety semi-skilled duties and responsibilities involved in the maintenance, repair, service and installation of equipment, machinery and related facilities. Keeps records and prepares reports; and performs a variety of tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility. Perform the tasks common to the classification under supervision.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Installs, maintains and repairs mechanical systems and equipment utilizing skills in welding, pipefitting, plumbing, mill righting and machinery.
- Maintains a safe work environment through job planning and identification and correction of hazards and adherence to plant safety rules and procedures.
- Troubleshoots and isolates mechanical problems; implements corrective actions, as appropriate. Performs basic carpentry work, small engine and tool repair, as required.
- Plans and lays out work in accordance with applicable standards and codes. Recommends changes to improve efficiency and/or quality of mechanical operations, as appropriate.
- Reads and interprets plans, diagrams and specifications. Maintains and repairs heavy mobile equipment.
- Provides estimates of time and material required; requisitions, tools and supplies in accordance with established procedures. Prepares and maintains documentation and reports, as required.
- Performs preventative maintenance duties such as cleaning, oiling, and lubricating equipment as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Organization skills and attentiveness to detail
- Interpersonal and communication skills with an ability to work effectively with a diverse range of individuals, teams, managers, supervisors
- Demonstrates skill to perform basic welding and cutting
- Demonstrates ability to read and understand mechanical piping drawings, equipment assembly drawings, technical manuals and blueprints
- Sound problem-solving skills
Position Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent required
- Completion of an apprenticeship preferred
- 2 year's relevant work experience required
