Job Summary: This individual will assist in the development and implementation of processes and system enhancements within the manufacturing and operations area. The focus will be on integrating practical process solutions that enhance manufacturing and operations proficiency. Specifically responsible for: installation, programming, calibration, troubleshooting, and preventive and corrective maintenance of automation equipment for the plant and facilities. Oversee the performance of a wide range of equipment automation. Performs and/or coordinates comprehensive expert technical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of equipment automation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Learn, practice, and adhere to all safety, quality, and department-specific policies as well as GMP/SOPs and prepare and maintain records as required.
  • Perform installation, calibration, configuration, and maintenance activities on wired and wireless instrumentation.
  • Perform troubleshooting for process equipment hardware and programming of controllers such as PLCs, HMI (Human Machine Interface), POCs (pump-off controllers), VSDs (variable speed drives), VFDs (variable frequency drives), and Plant DCS (Distributed Control Systems).
  • Document automation equipment maintenance using a CMMS program.
  • Analyze automation equipment failures and propose solutions to address the failures so they do not recur.
  • Support automation parts procurement and monitor current supply to ensure the availability of spare parts.
  • Ensure automation equipment is installed and functioning according to the facility design and applicable automation standards.
  • Generate as-built instrumentation drawings.
  • Coordinate contractors and vendors when additional support is required
  • Perform automation work in compliance with all corporate and local area safety procedures and policies.
  • Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Manage all aspects of assigned projects.
  • Engages in appropriate communication across teams and departments.
  • Practice Lean Manufacturing to improve efficiency and eliminate waste.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment to ensure efficiency, safety, and product integrity.
  • Demonstrate good judgment by reacting to unsafe acts or conditions by making them safe or reporting them to those who can correct them and documenting the correction.
  • Perform assigned tasks while wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Must always maintain confidentiality and have regular and reliable attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Skills:

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Automations and Controls or similar role in a high-volume manufacturing/industrial environment.[JS1]
  • Engineering degree preferred, or combination of experience and education in Mechatronics.
  • Read, write, speak, and comprehend English.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and dynamic environment and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Understanding of electrical equipment operation, maintenance, and industry safety standards.
  • Skilled at troubleshooting complex electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
  • Understanding of PLC hardware and programs based on ladder logic.
  • Skilled in PLC Languages such as Allen Bradley, Do-more, Automation Direct, and Siemens.
  • Ability to run equipment using internal or 3rd party software, able to decipher logs and troubleshoot equipment.
  • Understanding of pump-off controllers, remote terminal units and variable speed drives theory of operation.
  • Skilled in SCADA systems such as Ignition, C-more, and Factory Talk View.
  • Excellent understanding of P&IDs (piping & instrumentation diagram), PFDs (Process Flow Diagrams), Cause & Effect charts, I/O drawings, and process control information.
  • Knowledge of industrial instrumentation & measurement principles and calibration tools.
  • Knowledge of Sanitation practices for both facilities and equipment.
  • Requires a cooperative team orientation, common sense, good judgment, and professional behavior.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both written and orally within the organization.
  • Ability to give positive suggestions to improve operations in the work center.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and create technical manuals, blueprints, schematics, and engineering documents and specifications.
  • Advanced electrical background working on high and low voltage systems.
  • Skilled with common workplace software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • Experience working with CMMS software.

Physical Demands:

  • Vision, hearing, and speaking to meet performance standards.
  • Ability to stand, push, pull, lift, climb, bend, stoop, squat, walk, and fine motor skills to work with the following tools: all types of hand tools, small power tools, scoops, screens, scales, pallet jacks and drum dollies, mops, brooms, ladders, and portable stairs.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis and heavier weights using appropriate equipment and/or team lifting.
  • Ability to work while exposed to the elements for short periods.

Ability to work in elevated positions up to 50 feet and use proper safety precautions

Work Environment:

  • Requires ability to work in an environment that may contain potentially toxic and non-toxic fumes, dust, odors, noise, and temperature & ventilation variations while wearing any appropriate PPE (i.e.: safety glasses, safety boots, gloves, hair net, face mask, or uniform).
  • Work environment involves exposure to inclement weather on occasion.
  • May require working in cramped spaces and extending hands into the machinery.
