The Contra Costa Jewish Day School is a K-8 independent school with approximately 180 students, accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. We are seeking a Long-Term Substitute for our Second Grade General Studies Teacher. General Studies includes Language Arts, Humanities, Math, Science, Social-Emotional Learning and Service Learning.
The school offers small class sizes, teaching assistants, a supportive environment, true dedication to professional growth, and an innovative approach to learning. The long-term substitute teacher will have the full-time support of the 2nd grade teaching assistants, an experienced team working with the students throughout the year; as well as ongoing mentoring and support from the Assistant Principal for Lower School and the Senior Administrative Team.
We seek a teacher who wants to engage in school life and culture. This assignment will cover the Second Grade teacher’s parental leave plus one overlap week at the start to support a smooth transition, with the total engagement expected to be from January 21 through May 2, 2025.
In addition to curriculum planning and whole-group/small group instruction, our teachers are expected to differentiate the curriculum and accommodate students with specific learning needs/strengths. Collaboration with colleagues and productive connections with parents - including parent newsletters, emails, phone calls, and report cards with personalized narratives are also important expectations. Teachers are responsible for some coverage of Recess, and participation in Open House, Professional Growth Days, and Parent-Teacher Conferences. We seek outstanding candidates of all backgrounds.
- A Bachelor’s degree; a Master’s degree and/or credential is preferred
- A minimum of two years teaching experience
- A passion for working with students with a range of abilities, learning styles, and multiple intelligences. Experience teaching a differentiated, student-centered curriculum is preferred
- Proven success and enthusiasm for working constructively with parents
- Experience creating a nurturing, mutually respectful environment both in the classroom and with colleagues and administrators
- Effective classroom management, assessment, and organization skills
- Experience and success collaborating with other teachers in a team setting and embracing a culture of ongoing professional growth
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Experience using (or willingness to learn) curriculum: Wit and Wisdom, Handwriting Without Tears,Responsive Classroom, Toolbox, FOSS, Developing Number Concepts and Contexts for Learning Mathematics
Compensation: $20,000-$30,000, commensurate with experience.
