Job Title: Motor Vehicle Mechanic Helper
Job Overview:
The Motor Vehicle Mechanic Helper assists skilled Vehicle Mechanics in performing maintenance, repair, and service activities on automobiles, commercial motor vehicles (CMVs), buses, and vans. The role involves various tasks like washing, cleaning, and lubricating vehicles, loading and unloading automotive parts, maintaining work areas, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. This position works under general supervision, performing apprentice-level tasks and learning to diagnose and repair vehicle issues.
Key Responsibilities:
- Vehicle Maintenance Assistance:
Assist in maintenance, repair, and servicing of various systems, including mechanical and electronic controls, air brake systems, transmissions, and high-voltage generators in vehicles such as buses, vans, and trucks.
- Safety & Inspections:
Conduct safety checks, assist in repairs and adjustments, and respond to service calls for emergency breakdowns. Ensure work is performed safely and complies with OSHA standards.
- Basic Mechanical Tasks:
Perform routine maintenance tasks such as changing oil, lubricating parts, checking fluid levels, and replacing filters, batteries, and tires.
- Assist in Diagnosing Malfunctions:
Aid in troubleshooting vehicle systems, including brakes, cooling, drive, electrical, exhaust, emissions control, and hydraulic systems.
- Brake Service:
Assist in performing brake service and inspections, including replacing brake shoes, drums, calipers, and adjusting systems.
- Engine Assistance:
Help with tuning engines, servicing valves, fuel filters, turbochargers, and pressure checks.
- Record Keeping:
Maintain service logs, performed routine inspections, and assisted with creating work orders and material cost estimates using fleet management software.
- Equipment Maintenance:
Ensure tools, equipment, and workspaces are clean, organized, and in working condition.
- Compliance:
Assist in performing annual CMV inspections in line with FMCSR Part 393 and Appendix G standards. Aid in identifying defective components.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Ability to pass DOT pre-employment drug screening and background check
Preferred Qualifications:
- Class B CDL with air brake endorsement
- Technical training, formal apprenticeship, or trade school certification
- One year of experience assisting skilled mechanics with automobiles, buses, or heavy equipment repair
Skills & Knowledge:
- Familiarity with standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in vehicle repair and maintenance
- Knowledge of safe work practices and OSHA standards
- Ability to follow technical instructions and assist in complex vehicle diagnostics and repair
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to lift heavy equipment using hydraulic jacks or hoists
- Ability to work in various environmental conditions (indoors, outdoors, inclement weather)
- Capable of standing, bending, and working in confined spaces for extended periods
Work Environment:
This position is located at facilities on the Southwest Border (San Diego, El Centro, Yuma, Tucson) and may involve exposure to noise, chemicals, heavy equipment, and machinery.
