The Materials Manager is responsible for planning, organizing, and controlling the flow of materials used in production, ensuring timely and efficient deliveries, and managing inventory to meet production needs This position requires a strategic thinker with strong leadership skills.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Planning and Forecasting:
- Determine material requirements based on production schedules and customer demand.
- Develop and implement material plans to ensure timely availability of materials.
- Forecast future material needs and manage inventory levels accordingly.
- Plan production schedules and capacity requirements.
Sourcing and Purchasing:
- Identify and select suppliers of raw materials and other supplies.
- Negotiate prices and terms with suppliers.
- Manage purchase orders and ensure timely delivery of materials.
- Expedite orders when necessary.
Inventory Management:
- Maintain accurate inventory records and manage stock levels.
- Implement inventory control procedures to minimize waste and costs.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of materials.
Coordination and Supervision:
- Supervise all Materials personnel, including Planning, Puchasing, Stockroom and Shipping/Receiving across multiple shifts.
- Coordinate with other departments to ensure smooth material flow.
- Monitor production activity and control it to accomplish priorities set out in their plans.
Reporting and Analysis:
- Develop and maintain reports, analytics, and metrics related to material management.
- Measure operational performance against the plan.
- Identify areas for improvement in material management processes.
Other Duties:
- May be involved in developing and implementing material management policies and procedures.
- May assist in the development of budgets related to materials.
- May be responsible for managing the cost of materials, including reducing the cost of purchasing materials and reducing the cost of storage and handling.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, business administration, or a related field preferred
- Strong leadership skills required
- Minimum of 5 years supervisory experience required
- Proficient with ERP systems
- Strong understanding of inventory management
- Excellent communication skills
- Working conditions can range from office environment to working on the shop floor
- Purchasing or Program Management certifications are a plus
