What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Data Scientist / Data Developer position at Convergent Research?
Durham NC’s EvE Bio is seeking a Senior Data Scientist/Developer to join our data science team as its second member. The ideal candidate will have substantial experience with R and Shiny programming, comfort with making technical decisions in a rapidly evolving environment, and some scientific background. This is a hybrid role, requiring 2 days a week in our office in Durham, NC (Research Triangle). It requires authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
The data science team is responsible for a wide range of activities including external and internal data-oriented applications, and the generation of our publicly available data product. We use R primarily, including Quarto and Shiny, and deploy internally with Posit Connect. Our external application (viewable at data.evebio.org > Browse Data) is built with Quarto, Observable JS, and DuckDB.
This role will involve taking ownership of most of the existing data applications and data infrastructure, and continuing to develop them to meet the evolving needs of the organization, including increasing scalability and robustness. Doing this well will require a combination of technical and product management skills (working with users, prioritization, etc.). Characteristics of a person who will be successful in this role include resourcefulness, an ownership mentality, and user empathy (internal users and external data consumers). A person most likely to enjoy this role will be motivated by EvE’s non-profit mission, a high degree of autonomy and responsibility, and the opportunity to learn and develop new things quickly.
