Job Title: Project Engineer
Reports To: Engineering Manager
Objective
Design and deliver innovative material handling solutions that meet customer needs while ensuring project success from inception to commissioning.
Scope of Job
- Collaborate with the sales team and customers to develop tailored solutions.
- Oversee technical requirements and coordinate tasks to ensure successful project delivery from sales handoff to commissioning.
- Act as a key contributor to departmental goals, driving utilization and efficiency.
Primary Responsibilities
Solution Design and Collaboration:
- Work with sales staff, customers, and prospects to provide customized material handling solutions.
- Create and refine technical project proposals, including sourcing, CAD drawings, and documentation.
- Assist the sales team in designing and presenting viable solutions to clients.
- Attend customer site meetings to ensure accurate project scoping and implementation.
Project Management:
- Schedule, coordinate, and prioritize project workloads effectively.
- Develop detailed project scopes, timelines, and deliverables.
- Communicate project progress and updates to customers and internal teams.
- Support projects through completion, including onsite troubleshooting as required.
Operational Support
- Use and master business technologies critical to the role, including CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, HyCAD), CRM platforms, and productivity tools such as PowerPoint and Excel.
- Collaborate with vendor partners to source materials and manage specifications.
Key Challenges
- Managing multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Addressing incomplete information in project proposals.
- Accommodating late-stage revisions while maintaining workload balance.
- Delivering high-quality service to demanding and discerning clients.
Empowerment and Approvals
Independent Decisions:
- Approve business expenses under $50 to streamline daily operations.
- Set margins for quotes under $50,000.
- Implement late-stage changes under $150 to address project needs efficiently.
Collaborative Approvals (with Supervisor):
- Expenses over $50 or quotes exceeding $50,000.
- Late-stage changes requiring significant adjustments (over $150).
Strategic Oversight (with Supervisor or Director):
- Training programs, travel, and large-scale project quotes above $250,000.
- Substantial late-stage changes exceeding $1,000.
Skills and Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Associate’s degree in mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering, or equivalent experience.
- Proficiency in CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks) for 2D and 3D design.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in related engineering discipline.
- 2 years of experience in material handling or a related industry.
- Strong project management skills, including specification writing and scheduling.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Proven track record in building and maintaining professional relationships with clients, vendors, and internal teams.
- Creativity in problem-solving and designing innovative solutions.
- Mechanical aptitude and experience with sales or client interactions.
Performance Metrics
- Maintain or improve project profit margins from the time of sale through final invoicing, ensuring alignment with company financial goals.
- Achieve departmental utilization goals of 100% for the sales team.
- Deliver 80% of work on time.
