Summary of Job Purpose

The Shelter Manager is responsible for providing humane care for all shelter animals and supervising the Adoption Counselors and Animal Care staff during day-to-day tasks. The position is critical for providing proper nutrition, housing, and basic needs on a daily basis. The Shelter Manager is responsible for kennel duties, supporting play groups, canine and feline enrichment, performing adoptions, facilitating intakes, helping the Director of Animal Care manage the shelter population, facilitating vet care for the animals, and supervising other staff. The position is responsible for maintaining a safe and sanitary facility for animals and people. Additionally, the Shelter Manager is responsible for answering the phones, email inquiries, and helping clients in person. Additional tasks may be assigned by their direct supervisor, the Director of Animal Care.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Preparing food, feeding, and medicating animals exactly as instructed by the Veterinarian and Medical Staff.
  • Providing water, disinfecting kennels and cages, picking up fecal matter, washing litter boxes and dirty bowls to ensure the animals have the cleanest environment to live in.
  • Maintaining clean common areas in the shelter, including the volunteer and admin kitchen areas, lobby and hallway area, laundry, all storage room areas, and dog meet and greet areas.
  • Interacting with and getting to know the animals to ensure you are able to provide accurate information to prospective adopters when helping with the matchmaking process.
  • Providing high-quality customer service to people who visit or call CAHS. Maintaining a friendly demeanor and providing good customer service.
  • Actively reaching out to and interacting with the general public, specifically talking with prospective adopters to find out what they are looking for in a pet.
  • Mentor volunteers that are working with the shelter animals.
  • Helping people through the adoption process by sharing information about animal care and behavior, reviewing adoption applications, interviewing applicants in a conversational way, performing vet checks for applicants, making decisions to finalize or deny an adoption, and communicating with the applicant in such a manner that maintains a courteous and friendly attitude even if declining a request.
  • Following up on adoptions by phone or email once the animal has been placed in a new home. Providing advice for adopters who may be struggling with their new pet.
  • Ability to learn ShelterLuv or any other computer program we use to track animals in the shelter.
  • Demonstrates empathy when dealing with people who wish to surrender their pet to CAHS, work with owners to try to keep the pet in the home, if possible. This may occur in person, over the phone, or via email.
  • Demonstrate understanding of cat and dog behavior as well as safe handling techniques.
  • Support shelter offsite adoptions and other special events, whether that be by attending the event or staying at the shelter to care for the animals.
  • Monitoring the health of the animals on an ongoing basis and rapidly identifying any health problems or conditions (medical or behavioral) and immediately reporting it to the Director of Animal Care.
  • Maintaining medical records in ShelterLuv, including entering medications, preventatives, vaccines, and previous medical paperwork as directed by the Veterinarian, Medical Staff, and Director of Animal Care.
  • Works courteously and cooperatively with the other staff members.
  • Filling in for other areas and performing other tasks as assigned by the Director of Animal Care.
  • Taking photos, writing compelling stories, and creating videos for all of the available animals. Ensuring timely updates to the CAHS website.
  • Directly supervising the adoption and Animal Care staff on weekend days. Assisting with supervision and other operations-related task in conjunction with the Director of Animal Care on scheduled week days.
  • Resolving medical, adoption, and care-related issues when the Director of Animal Care is not available.

Treat all animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors with dignity and respect on and off the premises. Perform job duties in a professional, efficient, positive, and helpful manner at all times by communicating effectively with all departments within the organization.

Working Environment

This is an animal-dense environment. There is exposure to cleaning chemicals, fractious animals, and disgruntled people. Work can be physically and emotionally demanding. There are occasions when terminally ill or extremely aggressive animals will need to be euthanized humanely.

Schedule

Fixed schedule: either Thursday- Monday or Friday - Tuesday, depending on candidate availability. Must be able to work weekends and some holidays. 10 Holidays off, observed as floating holidays.

Physical Requirements

Physical ability to lift and carry 50 lbs; bend and reach; work with a variety of cleaning agents
