DIRECTOR OF TUBERCULOSIS PREVENTION AND CONTROL
DEPARTMENT: PULMONARY MEDICINE
SHIFT: 9AM-5PM

Job Summary

The Director of Tuberculosis (TB) Prevention and Control will oversee the TB program and staff within the Pulmonary Division of Cook County Health (CCH), ensuring the delivery of comprehensive, evidence-based clinical care to individuals diagnosed with or suspected of having TB, contacts of active TB cases, and individuals with latent TB infection deemed high risk for TB reactivation. Additionally, the Director will contribute to the development and coordination of the Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between the Chicago Department of Health (CDPH) and CCH, focusing on community outreach and education regarding TB care and infection control. This role involves close collaboration with TB experts, clinicians, and field workers, including staff from CDPH and Suburban Cook County, to ensure optimal TB management and care for patients

Typical Duties

  • Provides oversight and management for the TB program and staff
  • Provides comprehensive clinical services to patients as it relates to community outreach, infection control, and decreasing health disparities by retaining patients in medical care, including individuals with TB, suspected of having TB, contacts to active TB cases, and those at high risk of TB reactivation
  • Provides medical direction and consultation to CCH providers, CDPH TB Program staff, and community partners
  • Works closely with the multidisciplinary team on issues surrounding patient referral and patient service plans, both to include referrals internal and external
  • Approves/facilitates reimbursement of TB Program staff travel, clinical expenses, patient incentives, etc.
  • Oversees operation of outpatient TB clinics and clinical services
  • Works with Quarantine Station at O’Hare Airport to facilitate proper evaluation of immigrants in need of TB screening
  • Facilitates linkage agreements between clinical services and community partners within the City of Chicago who serve high-risk populations
  • Facilitates Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) between CDPH and the grant agent
  • Provides program reporting as required by CDPH
  • Develops and oversees of annual budget and assists with audits
  • Develops and maintains up to date clinical policies and procedures
  • Active participates in Centers for Disease Control (CDC) site visits and any relevant regulatory audits
  • Provides community and in-house consultation and educational outreach
  • Attends and participates in monthly TB case conference and meetings, in collaboration with CDPH as needed. Schedules monthly TB section meetings
  • Attends quarterly partner meetings with Chicago Quarantine Station officials
  • Participates with the Illinois Council on TB
  • Utilizes evidence-based practice and keeps abreast of local and federal policy as it relates to TB patient care and public health
  • Follows all hospital/medical-setting standards as defined by Joint Commission
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois
  • Licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse-Nurse Practitioner in the State of Illinois or must be able to obtain prior to starting employment
  • Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from an accredited college or university
  • Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment
  • Seven (7) years of clinical practice in TB management and control
  • Five (5) years of experience supervising and/or managing staff
  • Certification as a Family Nurse Practitioner
Preferred Qualifications
  • Expert level knowledge of TB guidelines

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of Tuberculosis management and control and public health principles
  • Knowledge of CDC, state, and local authorities
  • Excellent verbal, written communication, and interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with all levels of staff and a patient population composed of diverse cultures and age groups
  • Demonstrate analytical and organizational, problem-solving, critical thinking and conflict management/resolution skills
  • Ability to train by presenting concepts and demonstrating tasks
  • Ability to prioritize, plan and organize projects and tasks
  • Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast paced and stressful environment
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged
  • Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County
