PAINTER
LOCATION: STROGER HOSPITAL
SHIFT: 7AM-3:30PM
JOB SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Painter Foreman, prepares surfaces for painting by filling holes, scraping scale and washing woodwork and walls. Prepares new drywall for painting. Sets up ladders and scaffolding and lays drop cloths on the floor and furniture. Brushes, rolls or spray paints wood, plaster and metal surfaces of buildings (interior and exterior), barricades, pipes, radiators, vents, fire escapes, metal partitions, etc. Mixes and blends paints. Cleans and maintains equipment and brushes. Strips and refinishes office furniture and woodwork. Measures and hangs wall coverings. Performs other duties as assigned.
Typical Duties
- Prepares surfaces for painting by filling holes with plaster or wood putty and smoothing with sandpaper or other abrasive materials. Removes scale, washes woodwork and walls with chemical solutions, primes newly plastered holes and applies caulking as necessary.
- Chips away rust on steel work with a chipping hammer to avoid continual rust action and to smooth steel surfaces where rust blisters appear. Spots with rust inhibitive compound on all newly chipped steel to arrest further erosion.
- Brushes, rolls or sprays on one or more coats of paint, usually starting with a primary or sealing coat, allowing sufficient time intervals between coats for each to dry.
- Sets up ladders and scaffolding. Tests rope rigging by going over the ties to ensure safe use of the swing stage. Lays drop cloths to prevent paint from dropping on the floor or on furniture.
- Prepares new dry wall for painting by utilizing a taping process.
- Mixes and blends paints and stains to obtain desired color or shade and thins ready-mixed paint to correct consistency.
- Cleans equipment and brushes using water or mineral spirits.
- Measures and hangs wall coverings (paper, vinyl, etc.).
- Strips tables, desks, furniture, bulletin boards, etc., with chemical strippers and cleans and refinishes surfaces using stain, sealer and varnish. >
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Successful completion of an approved and recognized apprenticeship program attaining Journeyman status as a Painter (must provide proof at time of interview) OR-Five (5) years' full-time work experience as a Painter is required.
- Successful completion of the Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) 30-hour course in Construction, Safety and Health is required (Must provide proof at time of interview)
- Successful completion of the Occupational Safety Health Act (OSHA) Compliant Aerial Work Platform Training Course is required . (Must provide proof at time of interview)
Preferred Qualifications
Current and valid City of Chicago Scaffolding Card.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics
Thorough and extensive knowledge in the principles, methods, and technologies of painting.
Skill in the use of handheld tools and power sprayers.
Ability to work in an environment where unpleasant odors may occur from paint and solvents.
Must possess the physical stamina to stand, walk and climb throughout the work day.
Ability to kneel, crouch and stoop in difficult working positions.
Ability to work on high ladders and scaffolding.
Ability to do repetitive work in a quick and efficient manner.
Ability to make simple calculations and follow simple written and oral directions.
Skill and ability to mix and blend paints to obtain desired color or shade and consistency.
K nowledge of the different types of paints, brushes, rollers, etc. to be used on various surfaces.
Ability to erect and dismantle scaffolding.
This position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his or her own adequate means of transportation.
This position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion including, but not limited to climbing, lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving moderate to heavy weight
Physical and Environmental Demands
This position is functioning within a healthcare environment. The incumbent is responsible for adherence to all hospital and department specific safety requirements. This includes but is not limited to the following policies and procedures: complying with Personal Protective Equipment requirements, hand washing and sanitizing practices, complying with department specific engineering and work practice controls and any other work area safety precautions as specified by hospital wide policy and departmental procedures.
