What are the responsibilities and job description for the TUBERCULOSIS RESPONSE SPECIALIST position at Cook County Health & Hospitals System?
Under the supervision, the Tuberculosis (TB) Response Specialist functions as a specialist in communicable disease control with knowledge of Directly Observed Therapy (DOT) for the treatment of patients diagnosed with or believed to have been exposed to TB.
- Provides outreach to perform DOT and Directly Observed Preventative Therapy (DOPT) for TB patients of all ages
- Arranges visits at mutually agreed places and times
- Assures medications are taken per provider’s orders
- Monitors patient’s response to medication and general health status, and reports to Nurse Case Manager
- Maintains up to date record keeping of TB cases in State database Illinois National Electronic Diseases Surveillance System
- Assists/encourages patients to comply with medical follow up
- Educates patients and families about TB
- Instructs patients regarding proper sputa collection and storage
- Collects and delivers laboratory specimens
- Fosters a team-oriented work environment by assisting with other required activities of the DOT team including providing cross coverage, as needed
- Interviews TB patients and contacts
- Provides Tuberculin Skin Testing services, as needed
- Maintains up to date email correspondence
- Communicates on work tasks, shared job duties, and program needs between TB department staff including colleagues and supervisors
- Communicates and provides updates to the Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) TB Control related to both active TB cases and suspected TB cases
- Assists in prescription refill process including delivery of medications as needed
- Provides additional representation to the Public Health Department as needed
- Maintains accurate documentation of all activities and submits required reports.
- Attends and participates in TB meetings/trainings as scheduled
- Performs other duties as assigned
- High school diploma or G.E.D equivalent
- One (1) year of experience working within communicable disease management and control environment
- Must be able to work flexible hours, may include evenings or weekends, as needed
- Position requires moderate travel for which the employee must have a valid driver’s license/insured vehicle or other equivalent means of transportation
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university
- Bilingual
- Knowledge of core public health principles and practices specifically in the area of communicable disease management and control.
- Knowledge of local, County, State and Federal statutes, ordinances and regulations relating to tuberculosis treatment and control
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to work with all levels of individuals internally and externally
- Ability to communicate with a diverse environment and communicate with tact and courtesy
