Repairs and maintains items in the County Jail and Criminal Court Building and elsewhere in facilities throughout the Cook County criminal justice system such as tools, equipment, cell doors, fire escapes, vaults, safes, laundry equipment, guard towers, and exterior doors. Replaces steel plates, grills, bars, armor glass, gates, and doors. Maintains and repairs security locks and assists the Master Locksmith as needed. Inspect and approve work done
by Architectural Iron Contractors on Jail and Court Building property. Assists in the installation, maintenance, and repair of overhead rolling shutter doors, vertical lifts, slides, loading dock lifters and platforms, and related equipment.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an approved and recognized Architectural Iron Worker Journeyman apprenticeship program OR five (5) years’ full-time work experience as an Iron Worker is required.
  • Valid certification in Welding as recognized by the American Welding Society is required.

This position is considered a safety-sensitive position. Candidates who are selected to fill safety-sensitive positions must pass a required drug test as part of the pre-employment background check process.

  • Degrees awarded outside of the United States with the exception of those awarded in one of the United States territories and Canada, must be credentialed by the World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or a National Association of Credential Evaluation (NACES) member organization.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS
  • Skill in using tools such as electric welder, cutting and welding torch, drill press, hand drill, etc.
  • Working knowledge of detention locking systems, preferably the Folger/Adams System and/or similar security locking systems, or possession of such experience and skills as readily lend themselves to requiring such knowledge and skills in a relatively short time.
  • Skill in the maintenance, repair, construction, and operation of materials and equipment such as overhead rolling shutter doors, vertical lifts, slides, loading dock lifters and platforms, cell doors, vaults, security locks, etc.
  • Skill in locating and identifying equipment maintenance problems, making emergency repairs and taking corrective action.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read mechanical drawings and blueprints.
  • This position may require moderate to extensive travel to work assignments throughout Cook County, for which the employee must provide his/her own adequate means of transportation.
  • This position occasionally requires various types of physical exertion, including, but not limited to, lifting, pulling, pushing, and moving objects of moderate to heavy weight.

Physical Requirements:


Medium Work
Medium Work involves exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently or an amount greater than negligible and up to 10 pounds constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
