Characteristics of the Position
General Summary
Under the supervision of the Director of Building Management & Construction Unit, the Janitor is responsible for cleaning the facility in such a way as to promote health and safety while reducing the spread of infection. The Janitor is also responsible for assisting the Sanitarian and Environmental Services Coordinator in coordinating and promoting institutional Environmental Health Programs, including, but not limited to, pest control, sanitation, and facility maintenance. Further the Janitor participates in routine inspections and assessment of activities for general sanitation.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
Assist with carrying out all Sheriff’s Office janitorial and environmental services related policies and procedures.
Directly responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of assigned buildings, which includes all common areas (e.g. lobbies, offices, staff breakrooms, restrooms, trash removal, outdoor grounds), and other specified areas on the CCSO campus.
Ensure daily cleaning and maintenance tasks are executed and completed in a timely and orderly manner.
Prescribe appropriate cleaning materials and products needed for disinfecting and sanitizing the entire building according to Sheriff’s Office policies and procedures.
Complete required cleaning logs and records to show which areas of the building have been cleaned.
Conduct routine inspections of facilities to ensure sanitation expectations are met as established in policies and procedures.
Assist and coordinate with the Sanitarian and Environmental/Health Services Coordinator, to facilitate environmental services-related training that includes sanitation.
Remain current on trends and developments in environmental services, sanitation, and related fields and implements necessary changes to policies and procedures as appropriate.
Oversee the completion of the following tasks: removing trash and placing in the compactor; removing corrugated materials and placing in the baler; cleaning restrooms & lunchrooms.
Clean floors using brooms, mops, and/or floor scrubbers; effectively using chemicals to clean/sanitize equipment; and disassembly and reassembly of equipment for thorough cleaning.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Maintain clear and professional communication with facility staff, including corrections officer and supervisors, to coordinate cleaning activities.
Monitor and restock cleaning supplies as needed, maintaining, and reporting an accurate inventory.
Must be available to work any shift, weekends, and holidays.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to identify deficiencies in environmental services conditions and ability to implement effective and sustainable systems to ensure continuous improvement in environmental services conditions.
Ability to perform physical activities such as walking great distances over uneven terrain to inspect and assess building sites, lifting up to fifty pounds of equipment, and climbing up and down ladders and stairs to gain access to heating and ventilation systems, basements, crawl spaces, and attics.
Ability to apply basic mathematics skills, such as calculating totals, percentages, and extensions to verify quantities of goods received and maintain inventories.
Ability to work closely and effectively with the individuals in custody population.
Good verbal and written communication skills and the ability to train and communicate an understanding of environmental services-related policies and procedures to staff, individuals in custody, and visitors.
Basic understanding of Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Access.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift for extended periods.
Capacity to lift and carry heavy objects (up to 50lbs).
Ability to work in environment that may involve exposure to various weather conditions.
Minimum Qualifications
Possess a high school diploma or General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
Ability to perform key responsibilities and duties and possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities delineated above.
Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Ability to climb ladders and stairs.
Ability to work closely with individuals in custody.
Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and coordinate various projects in a timely manner with attention to detail.
Ability to multi-task and adapt with ease to changing priorities.
Communication and computer skills including the ability to email, scan, and print.
Responsibility for cleaning activities in common areas including community areas, office spaces including bathrooms, windows, floors, etc.
Responsibility for carrying and maintaining all cleaning supplies necessary to satisfactorily perform his/her routine functions.
Willingness to complete work quickly and efficiently to meet project deadlines.
Must possess a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience working in a large, complex work environment.
Three (3) years of related work experience in environmental health services or related field.
