General Function

In alignment with CIRI’s mission and values, the Operations Technician is primarily responsible for supporting the day-to-day activities of the Energy department, including managing project assets, coordinating resources, executing on-site operations and providing technical and administrative support. This position requires same-day travel to Fire Island and other remote locations approximately one to two times a week.

Major Activities (Typical Duties/Responsibilities)

  • Provide support to the Sr. Operations Manager, Energy in maintaining and managing project assets including the operation and maintenance of facilities, runways, roadways, vehicles and heavy machinery.
  • Coordinate project logistics by contacting vendors and overseeing related activities such as coordinating and preparing materials, tools and equipment.
  • Draft operations reports to include completing monthly, quarterly and annual reports; maintain equipment records.
  • Perform administrative tasks; process payable receipts, conduct data entry, manage correspondence and filing systems.
  • Process purchase orders, track inventory, and manage procurement processes to ensure timely and accurate delivery of materials and services.
  • Utilize software tools, including Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word) and similar programs for data analytics, reporting, presentations, and documentation of operational activities.
  • Conduct research to support operational improvements, assess cost-effective options for procurement of tools and equipment. Identify new industry practices, methods and approaches to improve existing or implement new processes.
  • Perform on-site tasks such as loading and unloading tools and equipment, clearing vegetation, snow management and vehicle maintenance.
  • Perform work involving manual labor and/or with various tools, such as blowtorches, forklifts, levels, lifts, power drills, welding equipment, grinders and saws.
  • Provide technical support to plant operations by monitoring production activities, operating plant equipment and collaborating with engineering and construction teams.
  • Conduct routine inspection and assessments and team-based troubleshooting to identify equipment and production issues, propose cost-effective solutions and perform maintenance to minimize equipment downtime and ensure seamless operations.
  • Stay current on safety best practices and requirements to ensure compliance with safety and environmental standards.
  • Monitor the safety status of equipment and promote and implement process improvements to enhance production safety and quality.
  • Travel to and perform work in remote locations, outside of normal business hours, to include nights and weekends, with possibility of overnight stay.
  • Maintain open communication with supervisors regarding all operational activities and promptly report risks and incidents to appropriate personnel.
  • Travel as necessary by vehicle, ATV, boat and commercial or small aircraft.
  • Same-day travel to and from Fire Island, or other remote locations, at least one or two times a week.
  • Occasional work outside of normal business hours, to include nights, weekends, or overnight stays, as needed.
  • Perform other duties as appropriate and as assigned.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Understand CIRI’s mission, values and strategic focus areas and incorporate knowledge into daily activities.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude to complete a variety of repairs and maintenance.
  • Ability to use equipment, materials and supplies properly and safely in general construction and maintenance work.
  • Intermediate logistics and project management skills, ability to coordinate resources and organize information to execute tasks and projects on time and on budget.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills: ability to work effectively, professionally and cooperatively with all levels of management, staff and third parties.
  • Ability to make decisions, solve problems and exercise good judgment.
  • Ability to travel by vehicle, ATV, boat and commercial or small aircraft.
  • Work well under pressure and independently prioritize workload, while working on multiple projects.
  • Proficiency in industry-standard computer software including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to deal with frequent changes, delays, interruptions and/or unexpected events or situations.
  • High degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.

Physical Abilities

  • Ability to climb 80-meter towers on a routine basis.
  • Ability to work around low to high voltage.
  • Ability to work in close quarters for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to walk and/or stand on hard surfaces for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to kneel, crawl, bend and twist at the waist with regular frequency.
  • Ability to reach at, above and below shoulder height with regular frequency.
  • Ability to push, pull, carry and lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds on a regular basis, and greater weights on an occasional basis.
  • Ability to maintain balance on uneven surfaces for long periods of time.
  • Sufficient fine and gross motor skills to operate computers and other equipment as required.
  • Visual, communication and hearing ability adequate to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Ability to travel by small plane, vehicle or ATV and safely operate a vehicle or ATV.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • College degree or vocational certificate in Engineering, Construction or Project Management strongly preferred.
  • Three or more years progressively responsible experience in construction projects, vehicle and equipment maintenance or operations field.
  • Ability to perform work at job sites outside of Anchorage one to two times a week.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have a valid Alaska driver’s license.
  • Ability to pass a background screening.
