JOB DESCRIPTION


Job Title:          NYO Official

Department:    Youth Education (YE)

Reports To:      Operations Manager, YE

Supervises:       None

FLSA Status:    Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:       N4

Job Type:         On-Call

AKBCU:            No        ICPA: Yes

General Functions:

The Native Youth Olympic Official works together with other officials and scorekeepers to officiate NYO competitions. The NYO Official scores competitors in their assigned event(s). This position will provide general supervision and assistance to scorekeepers to ensure that scores are being kept accurately and consistently. The NYO Officials’ role is limited to officiating at tryouts and events. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Determine the top performer in each round of competition based on NYO criteria.
  • Assist in keeping accurate records of each competition.
  • Oversee the athletes during each designated event and ensure completion of the event.
  • Evaluate each athlete’s performance and ensure equitable evaluation based on NYO criteria.
  • Keep score, measure and call athletes to compete, ensuring the event runs according to schedule.
  • Tally results for the head official’s certification at the end of each round of competition.
  • Ensure a safe environment for all participants and staff.
  • Attend officials’ meetings and trainings prior to the events. 

Job Specifications:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to provide clear instructions to groups of various sizes.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a contributory team member in a positive, productive manner.
  • Understanding of basic mathematic principles.
  • Knowledge and understanding of rules and regulations for the event officiating.
  • Ability to use sound judgment when interacting with staff and participants of various ages and backgrounds in a non-judgmental manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform under pressure with the ability to handle numerous priorities at the same time effectively.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native/American Indian community. 

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Continued employment will be contingent upon receipt of a satisfactory report from a state and federal background check.
