JOB DESCRIPTION

 

Job Title:          Teacher Apprentice 

Department:    Clare Swan Early Learning Center (CSELC)

Reports To:      Staff Development Manager

Supervises:      None

FLSA Status:   Non-Exempt

Pay Grade:       N1

Job Type:         Full-Time, Temporary

General Functions:

The Teacher Apprentice will participate in the Clare Swan Early Learning Center’s Teacher Training program, which is intended to train, mentor and support individuals seeking careers in Early Childhood Education. The Teacher Apprentice will work toward their CDA credential guidelines and hour requirements by actively engaging in direct instruction and hands-on classroom time.

 

Duties and Responsibilities, including but not limited to:

  • Complete all requirements set forth by the CDA Council to obtain the Child Development Associate Credential by completing 120 hours of direct instruction, 480 classroom hours, compiling a professional portfolio, completing an observation with a local PD specialist, and successfully passing the exam. 
  • Support teachers in preparing for individual and group learning activities.
  • Support children with various age-appropriate learning experiences in all development areas including social/emotional, cognitive, literacy and language, and gross and fine motor skills.
  • Monitor and assist in positive strategies to promote smooth functioning of the classroom and optimal individual development.
  • Understand basic child assessment, educational reporting with parents, and individual care plans for children.
  • Ensure regular and consistent attendance to stay on track with the program.
  • Be active and engaged in discussion topics during direct instruction hours.
  • Responsible for participating in program activities for children, both individually and within a group as necessary.
  • Reflect a high degree of sensitivity regarding confidential information.
  • Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

  • Ability to interpret direct instruction learning and apply it while in the classroom. 
  • Ability to promote feelings of security and trust in infants/toddlers and preschoolers by being warm, supportive, and comforting, and by establishing strong and caring relationships with them.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills; ability to present information and respond effectively and sensitively. 
  • Ability to work both independently and as a contributory team member in a positive, productive manner.
  • Ability to maintain composure in a sometimes stressful and fast paced work environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. 
  • Strong organizational and time management skills. 
  • Ability to coordinate multiple activities at once.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Ability to make sound decisions and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to use computer and technology basics in essential classroom programs such as ChildPlus, tadpoles, and Teaching Strategies.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform all other duties as needed and assigned.

Minimum Core Competencies: CITC Values Respectful Leadership, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills. 

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be eighteen (18) years of age or older and have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Must provide copy of current Health Report.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon satisfactory state and federal background check.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
  • Former or current Head Start Parents are encouraged to apply.

 

 

Work Environment:

Lifting, pushing and pulling up to 50 lbs. intermittently, standing for a long time, stooping and bending will be required. This position will involve daily exposure to weather.
