JOB DESCRIPTION
Job Title: Teacher Assistant
Department: Youth Education
Reports To: Program Manager
Supervises: None

Pay Grade: N3
Job Type: Full Time, Regular

General Functions:
This position will assist middle school classroom teachers in creating a positive learning environment to support students with academic and socio-emotional learning needs. This position will work with a multidisciplinary team to foster partnership between family and school in addition to providing regular contact with the student, educational resources, academic assistance with schoolwork, in school, after school and out of school time enrichment activities, and referrals for other educational services to students and families as needed.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assist teachers in instruction and supportive services.
- Work with small groups during instruction.
- Prepare instructional materials under teacher direction.
- Assist with classroom management.
- Assist with students with disabilities during the school day as assigned.
- Conduct club activities during or after school hours geared toward career exploration.
- Participate in the preparation of culturally based day camp activities throughout the year.
- Provide instructional support in the media center, library, and computer lab when necessary.
- Communicate effectively with parents, students, staff, and community members.
- Conduct parent involvement activities.
- Assist students with remedial work, tutor students, and monitor student progress.
- Operate classroom and office equipment.
- Assist students in the lunchroom, libraries, and gym.
- Supervise students on morning and afternoon buses, in the gym, hallways, and other as assigned.
- Report accidents, destruction of property, abusive behavior, bullying, and assaults.
- Adhere to all CITC and Anchorage School District policies and regulations.
- Maintain confidentiality with all individuals you work with.
- Perform all related duties as needed and assigned.

- Ability to use various communication styles to maintain contact with students and families.
- Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students and families and advocate for their needs.

Minimum Qualifications:
- Associate degree in counseling, education or a related field. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.
- Two (2) years working with Alaska Native families, knowledge of their values and belief systems.
- Valid Alaska driver’s license and insurable under CITC’s automotive insurance, which requires a driver to be at least 21 years of age and have had a driver’s license for at least three years.
- Continued employment is contingent upon a receipt of a satisfactory state and federal background check.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in education or counseling. Relevant experience may substitute for the education requirements on a year-for-year basis
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Good manual dexterity.
- Standing for prolonged periods of time.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, by utilizing proper lifting techniques and working in a safe manner.
- The ability to wear the appropriate PPE.
- Frequent bending, stooping, and reaching, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
- A good sense of spatial awareness.
- Exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, dust, noise level.
- Must be able to handle heavy materials and tools.
