Summary
We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Local History Librarian to join our team at Cooper-Siegel Community Library. In this role, you will play a vital part in promoting literacy and learning within our community by managing library resources and providing exceptional library services. This position is essential in supporting our mission to cultivate a love for reading and lifelong learning.
Responsibilities
- Manages the development and maintenance of the Library’s local history collections in print and digital formats.
- Makes local history collections accessible to individuals and organizations through the development and maintenance of policies, catalogs, and finding aids, as well as the digitization of collections.
- Pursues grant funding for the processing, conserving, and imaging of the local history collection.
- Plans and presents educational programs and workshops focusing on local history, genealogy research, and conservation practices.
- Builds community through researching, conducting, editing, and publishing stories for the oral history program Our Community Stories (OCS).
- Maintains, updates, and troubleshoots the Our Community Stories (OCS) website.
- Designs displays, programs, and services for our community with a focus on local history, archives, manuscripts, and born-digital content.
- Engages the community in the creation, sharing, and retention of community-born digital collections.
- Writes and submits content for monthly e-newsletter pertaining to local history collections, programs, and services.
- Maintains and updates equipment for the Library’s Digitize It Yourself (D.I.Y.) Lab.
- Trains, supervises, and schedules volunteers for the Library’s D.I.Y. Lab, and assists patrons in the use of the Lab.
- Maintains statistical information on the use of local history resources.
- Establishes quality working relationships with local historical societies, genealogical groups, and individual local history experts.
- Instructs patrons in the use of the online catalog, websites, reference sources, databases and various software programs pertaining to genealogy and local history research.
- Keeps informed of professional and technological development through participation in professional organizations, system meetings, workshops, continuing education courses, and reading professional materials.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in Library Science which includes a declared focus and/or concentration in Archival Studies from an ALA accredited university is preferred; bachelor’s degree in related field is required
- 1-3 years working with adults in a public library setting
- Experience using Ancestry.com, PA Photos and Documents, Family Search and other genealogy and local history resources
- Experience with digitization equipment such as flatbed scanners, A/V conversion equipment, and cloud-based data storage (i.e. Google Drive or Dropbox)
- Experience with digitizing and cataloging photos and documents in partnership with PA Photos and Documents
- Working knowledge of archival methods and handling of documents
