Short Description

In partnership with the Chief Nurse Executive, the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) assumes a critical role in shaping the future of nursing practice within the organization. The CNO will provide leadership over nursing and patient care services operations, ensuring the delivery of exceptional patient-centered care as well as a healthy work environment for team members.


The CNO will promote evidence-based practice, clinical excellence, and continuous quality improvement across the continuum of patient care.  The CNO will demonstrate strong financial acumen to manage budgets effectively and optimize resource allocation.

The CNO will foster a culture of professional growth and development, and will support mentorship, coaching, and educational opportunities to enhance leadership skills and clinical competencies.

 

The CNO will foster a culture of accountability and compliance with regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and license regulations. In addition, the CNO will remain current on industry trends, best practices, and emerging technologies

The CNO will assist executive management in resolving operational issues and developing strategic plans for improved patient care/outcomes. The CNO will lead with confidence and promote interdisciplinary collaboration, also demonstrating exceptional communication

 

The CNO will promote an environment of care which recognizes and values differences in staff, interdisciplinary team members, patients and communities


Experience Required

  • At least 8 years of progressively responsible experience in nursing/ health care management; preferable 2 years at the senior nursing leadership level or Associate CNO level.
  • Strong knowledge and understanding of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership (AONL) leadership competencies.

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in nursing required.
  • Doctorate degree in nursing preferred.
  • Education and experience comparable to leadership peers; certification in nursing administration desirable

License/Certification Requirements

  • Current NJ-RN license.

Special Requirements

  • Directs nursing services in all areas/departments where nursing care is provided.
  • Participates with members of medical staff, administrative team and hospital management in Strategic Planning.
  • Develops/implements the organization’s plans for providing nursing care to those patients requiring nursing care.
  • Assures collaboration among the clinical and support departments to meet patient care needs; establishes formal mechanisms for interdepartmental communication.
  • Participates in community-based groups/activities as a representative of hospital administration; participates with community and nursing leaders in decision-making and support of innovative nursing practice.
  • Keeps abreast of relevant issues that impact patient care and communicates to members of the administrative team.
  • Serves as a member on various clinical and operational committees.
  • Provides a liaison between the medical staff and clinical departments; promotes environment of collaboration with medical staff and hospital clinical departments to provide for the needs of patients.
  • Participates with other administrative team members in promoting physician and employee satisfaction; initiates corrective actions as needed.
  • Participates in assuming administrative responsibilities of facility in absence of CNE.
  • Provides leadership to nursing and clinical departments to ensure compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agencies.
  • Assures that the practice of nursing is consistent with the State of New Jersey Nurse Practice Act and in accordance with governmental regulatory agencies.
  • Infection Control Standards for Standard and Special Precautions, Employee Health Standards and others as they apply to assigned departments: Safety and Disaster, Preparedness Standards, Information Management and Improvement Performance
  • Develops/approves inpatient nursing-wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patient’s nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated and met; involves pertinent individuals/departments; obtains medical staff input/approvals as needed; assures that policies reflect the institution’s policies; medical staff bylaws and governing board decisions.
  • Assures that assigned departments are in compliance with hospital policies including, but not limited to: Human Resources standards for orientation, evaluation, staff rights, EAP, Drug-free workplace, IPN, Leave of absence; Workers Compensation and others
  • Collaborates with management, medical staff and clinical staff in planning, promoting and conducting hospital-wide performance assessment and improvement; reports findings to appropriate hospital and medical, establishes the inpatient nursing plan for performance improvement.

  • Seeks opportunities to incorporate the ethical dimensions of nursing practice, health policy and organizational behavior in the strategic planning and decision-making processes; acts as an advocate for the patients, nursing/clinical staff, of medical staff as appropriate with faced with ethical questions and assists with mechanism to assure resolution.

  • Assures that patient care needs in assigned departments are assessed, evaluated and met; utilizes quality reporting, patient satisfaction data and feedback from medical staff to assess areas for improvement.

  • Build system capacity to evaluate, adopt and translate valid research into practice

     

  • Collaborates with the PI Department to ensure hospital compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.

  • Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration in assessing and planning for patient care needs.

  • Communicate progress toward goals and providing for patient’s continuing care needs.

  • Collaborates with medical staff, Risk/Quality Dept. and other clinical departments to establish appropriate utilization of hospital resources to meet patient care needs.

  • Problem-solves with medical staff and appropriate departments when quality of care issues arises.
