Job Description

Responsible for creating, coordinating, implementing, managing, and auditing environmental, health and safety global management system to meet internal requirements as well as, compliance to government regulations. Maintain knowledge of current industry and regulatory trends and provide guidance on strategic projects to meet company’s expectations. Actively engaging and involving employees at all levels of the organization to develop and expand the EHS global management system.

Work location: Trumbull, CT or Stafford, TX

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor EHS Management System that aligns with CooperSurgical’s overall business strategy, to consistently improve the EHS culture and performance levels.
  • Continuous development and improvement of Global EHS Standards. Review quality and consistency of implementation of risk controls.
  • Provide focus, direction, leadership, and technical expertise to advise and train managers and supervisors on their roles and responsibilities in the EHS management system.
  • Develop and maintain EHS legal register to ensure the sites are in compliance with all the safety, health and environmental legislative requirements. Have the ability to identify gaps between legal requirements and site practices.
  • Regularly review global EHS systems, culture and performance data and trends and take appropriate action to share good practices or improve performance when good, poor, or significant changes are seen. Develop corporate EHS metrics.
  • Write technical and performance reports and provides documentation and data to senior management.
  • Planning and co-ordination of effective global rollout of EHS systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Stimulate and cultivate a zero-harm, continuous safety improvement mentality throughout the organization.
  • Manage budgets, schedules, and resources for interpreting and implementing EHS requirements, evaluating risks, and developing suitable plans and methods for a robust EHS program.
  • Analyze global working conditions to determine innovative safety measures to avoid accidents as well as improve employee health.
  • Supervise EHS personnel and facilitate their development through assignments, coaching, and mentoring. Assure that EHS requirements are properly interpreted and integrated in planning documents, design criteria, construction and operational plans, schedules, training programs, and subcontract documents.
  • Provide resources for rigorous and regular safety training. Ensure training is effective.
  • Develop and oversee the global EHS visits, inspections, and audit program at facilities to assess adherence to global EHS Policy, EHS Management System and to the mandates enforced by all countries where the facility is located.
  • Ensure all audit findings are implemented in a timely manner. Check for effectiveness.
  • Ensure EHS accidents and incidents are correctly reported by the facilities, and detailed, timely incident investigations are completed, including root cause analysis and corrective actions. Ensure corrective actions are completed to agreed timescale.
  • Review external visit reports (e.g. Government authority, ISO audit, fire and loss insurer), ensure the facility corrects legal non-conformities and encourage facility to implement other opportunities for improvement identified in the report.
  • Attend or support external audits and inspections, then manage interactions with external agencies.
  • Leads the recruitment and interview process for site EHS professionals. Support Site Director with initial training of new EHS professionals (e.g. training on EHS programs and systems). Provide indirect supervision of assigned site staff.
  • Meets and communicates with senior management, other functions, and EHS managers as necessary to apprise them of program status and gain insight to operations.
  • Keep up to date with latest developments and trends in EHS management by learning from external bodies (professional bodies/associations, academia, regulatory agencies etc.).
  • Confirms that environmental, health and safety permitting, specialized studies, assessments, reports, and regulatory submittals are completed as required.
  • Support the development and implementation of a Sustainability Roadmap.
  • Communicates openly and often with management, employees, customers, suppliers, and the community.
  • Creates a sense of trust within the organization by disseminating accurate information about industry and worldwide issues and concerns.
  • Takes financial responsibility for activities and facility to create positive impact to the business.
  • Act as liaison with Cooper Companies on various EHS related initiatives.
  • Develop and manage the acquisition integration framework for EHS.
  • Develop and support the Behavioral Safety program.


Qualifications

Position requirements:

  • 8-10 years in management experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of legal frameworks and typical EHS requirements for manufacturing companies (detailed knowledge of specific country level EHS legislation in region is not required).
  • Advanced knowledge of OSHA General Industry (29FCFR 1910) and Construction (29CFR1926) Standards, ANSI, ASME, NFPA, NEC among others and environmental programs such as: Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and Clean Water Act regulations (Storm Water Program or Pre-Treatment Program), Environmental protection agency (EPA).
  • Good knowledge of EHS Management Systems (e.g. ISO 14001 and ISO 45001), Process Safety and Behavior Based Safety techniques.
  • Extensive experience of EHS auditing.
  • Lean, Six Sigma or another formal training in reengineering or process improvement.
  • Travel is required for this role; approximately 50%.


Formal education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in health and safety, public health, engineering or biology, environmental science, or chemistry related fields of study.
  • Master’s degree in related fields of study, is a plus.
  • Certified safety professional (CSP), Certified industrial hygienist and/or other EHS related certifications are a plus.


Skills:

  • Ability to work across verticals and business units and develop working relationships at multiple levels from regional managers to site-level and shopfloor employees.
  • Ability to manage interactions with Government Agencies, justifying and defending company position when required.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter with strong project management, time management, and organizational skills to set schedules and perform day-to-day duties without significant management input.
  • Creative, innovative and the ability to solve problems to generate solutions.
  • Approachable with ability to influence EHS change and improvement across global, regional and local (individual) sites.
  • Technical proficiency (not expert) in environmental compliance, health and safety, industrial hygiene or process safety.
  • Excellent communication skills, with good level of written and spoken English. Bi-lingual capabilities is a plus.
  • Flexibility to perform various tasks to support the business.
  • Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
  • Analytical skills related to interpretation of regulatory requirements, recordkeeping, and proposal development.
