We are seeking a dynamic and collaborative Assistant Principal to join the leadership team at Sunset School, one of two schools that serves students in grades 3-6 within the Coos Bay School District. Our new administrative team member will work closely with the building principal and staff to foster an environment where students thrive academically and socially. Emphasis will be placed on supporting literacy initiatives, particularly through Oregon Response to Instruction and Intervention (ORTIi), along with school-wide improvement efforts focused on attendance, behavior support, and student engagement. The ideal candidate will bring a passion for improving student outcomes and contributing to a positive, inclusive school culture.

Why Coos Bay School District?

Our district's new mission statement is central to all that we do: Each student is known by name, strengths, and needs, and ALL students graduate with a plan: Enrolled, Employed, or Enlisted (3Es). This mission reflects our commitment to ensuring that every student in Coos Bay is prepared for life beyond school. It guides our work and reminds us daily of the importance of knowing our students as individuals, recognizing their unique abilities, and supporting them to achieve their full potential.

Responsibilities:

  • Instructional Leadership: Collaborate with the principal and teaching staff to implement best practices in literacy instruction, particularly through Oregon Response to Instruction and Intervention (ORTIi), to improve student reading outcomes.
  • School Culture and Climate: Foster a positive school climate that promotes high expectations for academic achievement, student behavior, and attendance. Lead efforts to improve school-wide attendance and behavior interventions.
  • Student Support and Management: Utilize Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) for both academics and behavior, ensuring all students receive the appropriate support to succeed.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: Build strong partnerships with parents and the community to support student success.
  • Staff Development: Work with teachers and staff to ensure quality professional development and effective instructional practices, including teacher evaluations.
  • Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze student data, including attendance and behavior trends, to inform decisions and create improvement strategies.
  • Program and Compliance Oversight: Ensure compliance with Oregon state laws, including special education, 504 plans, and Federal programs such as Title 1, Title IX, and Title X.

Education & Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Education or a related field.
  • Hold or be qualified for an Oregon Administrative License.
  • A background in staff supervision, curriculum and instruction, assessment, and educational reform.

Desired Qualities:

  • Experience: At least 3-5 years of experience in teaching or leading an elementary school, with a strong understanding of literacy instruction, particularly in the Oregon Response to Intervention (RTI) framework.
  • Collaborative Leadership: Ability to work collaboratively with staff, yet make decisive, data-driven decisions for school improvement.
  • MTSS Expertise: Experience with MTSS in academic and behavioral contexts, specifically for struggling students.
  • Teacher and Staff Evaluation: Familiarity with evaluating teacher effectiveness and providing feedback to improve instructional practices.
  • Behavioral and Attendance Supports: Demonstrated ability to lead school-wide efforts to improve attendance and implement effective behavior support systems.
  • Crisis Management: Training in Collaborative Problem-Solving and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) is highly desirable.
  • Special Education and 504 Knowledge: Experience with special education and 504 plans.
  • Oregon State Laws & Federal Programs: Knowledge of Oregon school laws and regulations, as well as Federal grants and programs such as Title 1, Title IX, and Title X.
