Overview
To provide the administration of medications based on current state regulations. The MNA accepts direction and supervision from the delegating nurse.
Responsibilities
- The Licensed Medication Nursing Assistant, under the direction of the delegating nurse, performs various duties assisting in the care of residents in accordance with the established methods, procedures and policies of the Coos County Nursing Home.
DUTIES (in addition to LNA duties, as required)
- Receives report at the beginning of shift with nurses. Reports any observations concerning resident condition, emergency situations or difficulties with medications to the supervising/delegating nurse throughout the shift, should they occur.
- Prepares, administers and charts oral, topical, suppository, nasal , ocular, and otic medications as prescribed by the physician and as directed by the delegating nurse through shift assignment and Medication Administration Record (MAR).

- Administration to a medically unstable resident
- Calculation of dose
- Conversion of dose
- Injection
- Administers PRN medications as prescribed by the physician, as directed by the delegating licensed nurse. Delegating nurse must be available to monitor the effects on the resident. Documents on MAR.
- Recognizes the significance and is able to perform accurate vital sign monitoring when indicated by drug order. Reports to the delegating nurse any vital signs that are outside the parameters established by the order. The delegating nurse will provide direction. The MNA documents vital signs on Vital Sign Sheet located in Resident Chart.
- Report any untoward resident symptoms or other pertinent information immediately.
- Assists with maintaining medication supply, assists with ordering of new medications, reorders existing medications and restocks medicine carts as needed.
- Maintains current knowledge base regarding any medication he/she administers.
- Checks all first doses (new orders) against physician order sheet; does not administer medication based on verbal order of nurse.
- Notes and reports any unusual conditions, emergency situations or difficulties, including resident’s refusal of medication, to the delegating nurse.
- ***MNA reports possible or known medication discrepancies immediately to the delegating nurse. The delegating nurse shall investigate any reported or suspected medication discrepancies.
- Cleans and restocks medication treatment carts and medicine room.
- Performs Licensed Nursing Assistant duties as needed that do not interfere with successful medication administration.
- Performs other duties as requested
- Attend Inservice classes on a regular, on-going basis. Four hours of the minimum 12 hours per year must be pharmacology or medication administration related.
- Attend nursing assistant meetings on a regular basis, at least three (3) per year.
- Follows chain of command.
- Exhibits safety consciousness in all aspects of job performance.
- Is knowledgeable in Infection Control practices.
- Refers to Policy Manuals located on the Nursing Unit, for policies and procedures relating to Medication Administration/Treatments, e.g. Fleet & Soaps enemas.
- Participation in Committees as assigned.
