Job Description
A Pipe Layer has a strong background in the construction of heavy civil construction projects including underground utilities consisting of sewer, water, storm drain, trench shoring and heavy dewatering. The pipe layer is responsible for installing underground pipes including positioning, joining, and aligning the pipes at proper depths, angles, and grades; including all associated structures.
Responsibilities
Safety
- Know and follow all company, client and OSHA safety rules and company policies and procedures.
- Complete all required safety reporting within 24 hours.
Construction
- Prepare construction sites by clearing obstacles and hazards.
- Identify, use, and operate various equipment, hand, and power tools applicable to the task.
- Proficient in the safe and efficient use of layout tools, and measurement tools.
- Measure and mark pipes for cutting.
- Ability to load or unload construction materials, pipe, and equipment.
- Confirm utilities and other buried lines or structures are located prior to digging.
- Join, wrap, seal, and bed sections of underground pipe.
- Assist with establishing alignment and grade with the use of grade stakes and lasers.
- Coordinate all other activities in the excavation as directed.
- Signal equipment operators to facilitate alignment, movement, and adjustment of machinery to conform to grade specifications.
- Dig, spread, and level dirt and gravel, using pick, rake, shovel, etc.
- Dig up existing pipes and lines.
- Prepare ground trenches for pipes and utility lines.
- Use chains, slings, or guide wires to rig pipes, trench boxes, and slide rail shoring systems.
- Guide pipes and shoring devices into place, assisting the equipment operator.
- Remove, fill, or compact earth.
- Work safely around heavy equipment, and people at all times.
- Produce high quality work, safely and productively at all times.
- Assist all workers and perform daily job site housekeeping and cleanup.
- Troubleshoot and solve problems.
- Move from job to job as projects progress.
- Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned by supervisors.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years experience working as laborer or pipe layer on underground utility construction worksite.
- Display a willing attitude to learn from others and possess a strong sense of personal responsibility.
- Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Focus to work safely in close proximity to heavy equipment and underground utilities.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, team environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in a fast paced, team environment.
- Ability to travel to areas of remote construction project location when required.
Physical Requirements
- Meet all conditions of COP’s drug and alcohol testing requirements as a condition of employment, including pass a pre-employment drug screen and alcohol test.
- Able and willing to work extended hours and possible nights and weekends, as required.
- Able to stretch, walk, lift, reach, stood, stand, grasp, balance, climb, kneel, crouch, and lift up to 50 pounds frequently.
- Able to work in outside environments being subjected to weather changes, noise, vibrations, and job hazards.
- Good hand and eye coordination.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $24.00 - $28.00 per hour
