Purpose of Role:
Reporting to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer, the Field Geotech II will assist the project by collecting and processing data in support of geotechnical studies. The team is looking for a self-motivated individual who wants to learn and help develop the geotechnical aspects of the site. The work environment provides a diverse experience working with various professionals from different departments with responsibilities outside and in-office.
This role will be located at the Copper World Project, approximately 45 minutes southwest of Tucson in Helvetia, Arizona.
Roll Accountabilities:
- Perform the function in conjunction with and respect Hudbay’s Safety and Environmental policies.
- Support the Senior Geotechnical Engineer working closely with engineers, and other team members to achieve the objectives of the project and production unit, maintaining the integrity of mine walls and ensuring the safety of mining operations.
- As required, support the implementation of necessary changes to safely operate pit walls and dump slopes. Changes must be documented and provided on time and stored.
- Independently perform routine work such as: identifying geotechnical hazards, site inspections and reports, collecting and assessing geotechnical data, coordinating with staff and contractors.
- Field work consists of logging core and test pits, structure and surface geology mapping, survey verification, coordinating with contractors, and inventory validation.
- Prepare detailed reports, field notes, and data collection forms based on test results.
- QA/QC geotechnical data and identifying data discrepancies.
- Assist with developing ground control protocols.
- Complete field inspections identifying work hazards.
- Assist with planning for geotechnical data acquisition in support of the project.
- Monitor and record data from geotechnical field tests, interpret the data, and compile comprehensive reports.
- Attend the daily production meeting and provide the necessary information to achieve production targets.
- Support the preparation of monthly reports.
Replace (Senior) Geotech Engineer when is absent.
Competences:
- Exhibits an awareness of environmental and safety issues.
- Perform tasks understanding the impact on other parts of the business.
- Monitors/records walls stability and performance.
- Performs QA/QC support in the field.
- Assists in the development of mine plans (Pits, dumps) providing geotechnical considerations.
Ensure quality control of date.
Minimum Qualifications and Education:
- Bachelor of Engineering in Mining, Civil, Geological, Geotechnical, or related engineering/science discipline is required.
- Proficient with MS Office, related software, and computers.
- Ability to travel to and from site is required.
Strong communication and team skills are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience at a mine site is preferred.
- Previous experience with geomechanical logging is preferred.
Previous experience with structural mapping is preferred.
