Underwriter II

CopperPoint has an exciting opportunity for an Underwriter II in Phoenix, AZ. This role is responsible for actively pursuing and securing Small Workers' Compensation opportunities for both new and renewal business within a designated territory. Operating within a straight-through processing environment, the Underwriter II will support both short-term and long-term business strategies to drive profit and growth through sound underwriting decisions.

Job Responsibilities: 

• Analyze Small WC accounts to make sound underwriting and business decisions based on established guidelines, with the ability to make quick decisions and provide fast turnarounds, while effectively utilizing underwriting resources and adhering to the highest processing standards.
• Adopting a portfolio underwriting mindset, encompassing the entire book of business for understanding both New Business and Renewal Business actions.
• Build strategic relationships to help drive new business production, renewal business retention, profitability, and other business objectives as appropriate.
• Along with Business Development, lead agency engagement activities and meetings for assigned agencies – regularly meeting with and communicating strategies and goals, while identifying opportunites for each agency within assigned distribution channel.
• Educate assigned agencies on company portfolio appetite and system capabilities, particularly for automated underwriting.
• Maintain thorough knowledge of assigned territory regarding production opportunities, competitor information, market intelligence, and geographic nuances.
• Price business according to company underwriting and pricing model, balancing effective pricing and risk selection to produce profit and growth, while maintaining successful agent relations and the highest level of customer service.
• Adhere to individual levels of authority established at the highest level of the team.
• Contribute to the mentoring and training of less experienced underwriters on the team.  Participate in the hiring and onboarding of new team members as needed.

Qualifications: 

• BS/BA college degree. The knowledge and skill levels acquired through undergraduate level studies especially in the areas of business administration, finance, or marketing.
• 5 years of insurance industry experience, ideally in Property & Casuality, with increasing experience and responsibility 
• One of the following designations is ideal:
  • Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU)
  • Associate In Risk Management (ARM)
  • Associate In Commercial Underwriting (AU)
• Strong business and financial acumen.
• Stong production underwriting mindset.
• Ability to effectively influence internal and external stakeholders.
• Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively lead self and others through change.
• Knowledge of insurance principles, rates, rules, forms, procedures, regulations, coverages and business processes preferred.
• Analyze complex administrative or business problems, evaluate alternatives, and make appropriate recommendations.
