Position Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Equipment Operator to join our Field Operations team. Under general supervision, the Equipment Operator will operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment and participate in the work of water distribution, field maintenance, and construction crews. This position plays a vital role in maintaining the District’s infrastructure and ensuring the efficient delivery of water to our customers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment, including rubber-tired loaders, backhoes, trucks, tractors, graders, scrapers, and track-driven equipment such as dozers and loaders.
- Inspect, clean, and perform minor servicing and repairs on equipment.
- Conduct vegetation and sediment control on water conveyance systems.
- Maintain and repair District buildings, fixtures, grounds, water structures, and associated equipment.
- Perform welding work and operate a variety of hand and power tools as needed.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, river units, suppliers, board members, and the public.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), OR one year of related experience and/or training, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of the operation, care, and light servicing of heavy maintenance and construction equipment.
- Familiarity with methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in construction and maintenance work.
- Understanding of Motor Vehicle laws and regulations affecting heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to operate assigned heavy equipment with skill and safety.
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor requiring strength, dexterity, and agility.
- Skill in using hand and power tools involved in construction and maintenance work.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, and drawings.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to deal tactfully and courteously with the public.
- Possession of a valid California Class C License at the time of appointment, with the ability to obtain a Class A or B License if required.
- Possession and proof of a good driving record, free from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents.
Typical Physical Demands:
- Operate District vehicles and equipment in a safe and efficient manner.
- Carry, push, pull, reach, and lift equipment, parts, etc., weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb during field maintenance and repair work.
- Work in environments with exposure to dust, dirt, and significant temperature changes.
- Communicate orally with District staff and use telephones and computers.
- Sit, stand, and/or walk for extended periods.
- Walk or stand on unlevel surfaces ranging from 30-60 degrees.
- Work and drive at night.
Environmental Factors:
- Exposure to extreme cold and heat, wet and humid conditions, and loud noise levels.
- Work above floor level on ladders or other surfaces in high and/or precarious places.
- Exposure to fumes, airborne particles, chemicals, and moving mechanical parts.
- Occasional irregular or extended work hours, including overtime.
