Do you have a passion for aquatics and want to join a friendly, supportive and fun work culture? The Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is seeking reliable and service-oriented candidates to be Lifeguards for the summer of 2025. 

Typical Schedule: 20-30 hours a week from March through October; shifts available every day of the week including holidays.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:
Under direction of the Recreation Supervisor II, Senior Recreation Coordinator, and pool management, performs a full range of lifeguard services during public sessions and swim instruction classes; protects life, prevents accidents, and enforces pool regulations; responds appropriately in the event of an accident/emergency; performs a variety of daily maintenance assignments, such as hosing, sweeping, and cleaning restrooms; and performs related work as required.  Lifeguards are also responsible for teaching swim lessons.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Lifeguard I is the working level in the lifeguard series. Lifeguard I is distinguished from the higher level class of Lifeguard II - Assistant Pool Manager in that the latter provides lead directions and assumes responsibility for the operation of a pool facility in the absences of the Pool Manager.

Established in 1958, Cordova Recreation & Park District (CRPD) is an independent special district governed by an elected Board of Directors. 

We provide quality recreational programs, parks and services for our diverse and growing region. We currently operate over 50 parks and facilities across more than 600 acres of urban and open space. We also operate Cordova Golf Course which is a full-service 18-Hole course with a lighted driving range, pro-shop and lessons from PGA professionals. We host dozens of events throughout the year and provide athletic, educational and creative outlets for children and adults of all ages.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices:

  • Observe swimmer and non-swimmers in the pool area from assigned station to identify and prevent unsafe conditions or potential hazards. 
  • Supervise patrons and participants in pool and deck area.
  • Promote and enforce safety procedures; renders care in the most current American Red Cross techniques in water safety, lifeguarding, first aid, and CPR/AED to person in need of assistance.
  • Use strong customer service and demonstrate interpersonal skills during public contact during the conduct of activities.
  • Prepare detailed and complete written reports including accident and incident reports.
  • Acts as Department representative to local residents, community groups, private businesses, and others concerning questions, problems, concerns, and activities in the provision of recreation programs and facility operations.
  • Attend all trainings when provided.
  • Assist in the general upkeep of pool and office area and surrounding facility including hosing, sweeping, and cleaning restrooms.
  • Perform related duties as required.


The following generally describes the knowledge and ability required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time in order to successfully perform the assigned duties. 

Knowledge Of
  • Basic operations, services, and activities of a swimming facility.
  • Lifeguarding principles and lifesaving skills. 
  • Basic water safety practices.
  • Basic principles and practices of general pool maintenance functions.
  • Principles and practices of public relations. 
Ability To:  
  • Rescue persons using lifeguard techniques.
  • Remain calm in emergency situations.
  • Maintain fitness level to perform duties of the job.
  • Communicate with tact to secure voluntary compliance with facility policies and rules. 
  • Prepare written reports and records. 
  • Assist with daily maintenance of the swimming facility.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Resolve problems promptly.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. 

Education and Experience Guidelines - Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be: 

Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. 


License or Certificate: 

Required to hold current certification in Lifeguard Training (which includes Standard First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer and AED). 


Additional Requirements: 

Department of Justice (DOJ) background check. 

A clear tuberculosis screening is required.

Certification in First Aid for Public Safety Personnel (Title 22) within three (3) months of employment required.

Certification in Emergency Oxygen within three (3) months of employment required.

   
PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Environment: Work is performed in and around pools and in standard office environment; exposure to all types of weather and temperature conditions including hot, wet, and/or humid conditions; work at various locations throughout the District; may be required to work days, night, weekends and holidays.  
Physical: Sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in and around pools and in an office setting; to work outdoors in all types of weather and be able to withstand frequent exposure to hot, wet, and/or humid conditions; to sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist;  to use standard office equipment; to attend off-site meetings; to enter and exit the pool to assist swimmers and demonstrate skills correctly; to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds; to make frequent decisions and maintain concentration with distractions; frequent public and coworker contact; and to move equipment and supplies at aquatic centers
Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.  
Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
