This role requires strong leadership skills, adherence to safety and regulatory compliance, and the ability to manage deck crew and operational logistics effectively.
Deck Officer Responsibilities
- Oversee vessel movement within the shipyard, including docking, undocking, and mooring operations.
- Ensure compliance with maritime safety regulations, environmental policies, and company procedures.
- Supervise and train deck crew on best practices, safety protocols, and operational procedures.
- Coordinate with engineering, maintenance, and logistics teams to support ship repair and refit operations.
- Conduct inspections and routine maintenance of deck equipment, including winches, mooring lines, and safety gear.
- Monitor weather conditions, tides, and other navigational factors to ensure safe vessel handling.
- Maintain accurate records of vessel movements, crew activities, and maintenance schedules.
- Assist in emergency response and incident management, ensuring rapid and effective action during onboard or dockside emergencies.
- Liaise with port authorities, pilots, and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with maritime laws.
- Support loading and unloading operations, ensuring proper stowage and cargo handling procedures.
- Merchant Mariner’s Credential (MMC) with appropriate officer endorsements (e.g., Chief Mate, Second Mate, or Third Mate). STCW certification required.
- Minimum of 3-5 years of experience as a Deck Officer, preferably in a shipyard, repair facility, or vessel operations environment.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. Proficiency in deck operations, navigation, and ship handling.
- Ability to work in outdoor environments, lift heavy equipment, and perform physically demanding tasks.
- Familiarity with shipyard safety protocols, maritime regulations (USCG, OSHA, IMO), and vessel maintenance procedures.
