Marine Electrical Controls Service Technician Job Description

The Marine Electrical Controls Service Technician organizes, manages, and performs electrical controls service jobs for our clients, including troubleshooting, maintenance, installation, and repair for vessel mechanical and control systems in the field or a shop environment. To be successful in this position, excellent attention to detail, communication skills, and strong self-discipline are imperative.

Marine Electrical Controls Service Technician Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots electrical / mechanical systems and controls regulating vessels' medium voltage diesel-electric propulsion generators, alternate current medium voltage variable frequency drives, and auxiliary machinery, required to power, propel, and navigate the vessels, including engines, generator sets, drives, motors, connected controllers, and switchgear.
  • Coordinate with the service office to plan and prepare job scope, order parts, tools, consumables, and materials required for the project.
  • Performs periodic and routine diagnostic tests on electronic monitoring and control systems and related hardware equipment to ensure optimal performance; adjust and repair as needed.
  • Accurately document all repairs and time allocated to the project in addition to completing detailed daily and final job progress reports to include parts used and services performed.
  • Provide excellent customer support effectively communicating as needed for troubleshooting and project-related issues via phone, email, and while on-site as a representative of the company.
  • Routinely board vessels to inspect, repair, calibrate, and test the electronic control hardware and data acquisition units, including all instrumentation associated with main propulsion and auxiliary machinery.
  • Flexibility to support the Service Department on-call schedule as required.
  • Maintain equipment and work area in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.

Marine Electrical Controls Service Technician Position Requirements

  • Knowledge of relevant equipment, safety procedures and policies, and proper use of tooling.
  • Experience in the assessment, repair, and maintenance of electronic ship controls; preferably in the maritime environment with 24-480 voltage.
  • Experience working with vessels' PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) based control and monitoring systems and similar successor and related systems.
  • Experience using a multimeter for DC / AC applications, send out and test 4-20 mA signals.
  • Must be analytical, reliable, and able to work independently or in small teams with attention to detail and good follow-through.
  • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files and transfer digital pictures from camera to computer and enhance as required and label them for report purposes.
  • Ability to travel on short notice, be in the field for extended periods (including weekends and holidays) and work overtime as needed.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain TWIC and other clearances / certificates required by US Gov’t, Offshore Companies, and / or Ports.
  • Strong communication skills to interface and communicate effectively with customers and team members as a representative of the company.
