The Mechanic is responsible for fabricating and welding assemblies, structures, and components—including buildings, beams, girders, boats, and piping—using various metals such as steel, aluminum, stainless steel, and copper-nickel. The role involves reading and interpreting blueprints, performing layout work, assembling components, and ensuring weld quality to contract specifications. This position requires minimal supervision and may involve leading and directing others in the fabrication process.
Mechanic Responsibilities
- Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, sketches, and job procedure manuals to accurately lay out, fit up, and assemble components.
- Identify and work with various structural steel and alloy materials, ensuring proper cut lengths, piece marks, direction marks, and weld sizes.
- Develop, bend, roll, build up, and assemble different types of plated assemblies, piping, and structures.
- Perform manual, semi-automatic, and automatic welding operations in all positions, including FCAW, GMAW, and GTAW.
- Use oxygen/acetylene gas torches for cutting, pre-heating, and shaping materials as needed.
- Set up and operate fabrication equipment, including production machines, cranes, and welding machinery.
- Maintain welding standards, ensuring high-quality welds that meet inspection criteria such as UT testing.
- Assist in organizing and directing work crews, ensuring schedules and project deadlines are met efficiently.
- Adhere to workplace safety regulations, following written and verbal instructions regarding hazardous conditions.
- Proven experience in fabrication and welding, with the ability to perform essential job duties with minimal supervision.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints, weld symbols, and layout plans.
- Skilled in using various fabrication tools and equipment, including CNC and NC machines (preferred but not required).
- Ability to weld a 3/8” horizontal fillet weld with wire (FCAW); experience with UT welds is a plus.
- Strong knowledge of material types, welding techniques, and structural assembly methods.
- Ability to lead and work collaboratively with a team to ensure efficient production.
